    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode and a nozzle combination to transport ionizable gas to the end of gas-reinforced electric surgery equipment. SOLUTION: An electrode 32 and a nozzle combination 30 have the base end part 34, the tip end part, and a part with a constant length between the base end part 34 and the tip end part 33, and transport an ionizable gas to an electric surgical pencil set on a patient. A shroud 36 surrounds the electrode 32 along the part with a constant length, but the base end part 34 and the tip end part 33 are made to remain exposed. A port 41 including a tube cavity communicating with a passage 39 is formed on the shroud 36 to make a fluid capable of communicating between the passage and the tube cavity. An end cap 43 is mounted on the base end part 38 to form an airtight seal between the base end part of the electrode and the rear part 38 of the shroud 36.

An insulating sleeve about the bolt is between central openings of the elements and the bolt. A pair of insulators about the bolt has the stack therebetween; one insulator is between the plane and the stack and the other is near the threads. The intermediate portion attaches to the housing at the plane with decoupling and sealing. An irrigation channel conveys fluid. The drive energy input, the feedback signal and the reference outputs are insulated by the sleeve and pair from the bolt. A washer against the insulator and about the threads applies axial but not torsion to the insulator when a clamping nut on the threads holds components on the bolt. The clamping nut is in circuit with electrosurgical energy as the reference return for electrosurgery. A tool fastens to a connector for transmitting axial vibrations in the form of a predefined stroke at a tip thereof.

    Abstract: A circuit (10) concurrently activates a gas flow control valve (15) and electrosurgical generator (11) from an electrosurgical pencil (13). An automaticswitch (16) receives current flow upon the operation of the energy request button (12) by the surgeon. The switch connects to the gas surgical unit (26) flow control valve (15) operating it to control inert gas to the pencil. An electrode (32) and nozzle combination (30) transports ionizable gas to a tip (31) on the pencil for gas enhanced electrosurgery on a patient. An electrode (32) has proximal and distal ends (34) with a length (35) between and along an axis. A shroud (36) surrounds the electrode (32) along its length (35) leaving the proximal and distal ends (34) exposed. A patient part (37) on the shroud (36) points toward the patient. A rear part (38) on the shroud (36) points toward the rear or the pencil. The parts align substantially along the axis so a passage (39) between the parts defines a space(40) within the shroud (36) and about the length (35). A port in the shroud (36) has a lumen (42) protruding therefrom at an angle to the axis. The lumen (42) connects with the passage (39) for fluid communication. An end cap (43) attaches to the proximal end (33) for surrounding the electrode (32) and for forming a gas tight seal between the proximal end (33) and the rear part (38) of the shroud (36). A complimentary portion (44) on the rear part (38) and an anti rotation lock (45) on the end cap (43) engage to prevent relative rotary motion. An anti twist posterior (46) on the end cap (43) interengages with the pencil to prevent relative rotation. The anti twist posterior (46) and the pencil each have hexagonal interengaging features thereon. The shroud (36) and end cap (43) are of polymers that can be injection and overmolded, respectively to the electrode (32). A method makes a gas tight seal between a shroud (36) and an electrode (32) by injection molding then fixturing the electrode (32) without contact with the shroud (36). Overmolding an end cap (43) to the shroud (36) attaches the electrode (32) and to form the seal.

    Abstract: An electrode and nozzle combination 30 for transporting gas to a tip 31 of an electrosurgical instrument for Argon gas enhanced electrosurgery comprises an elongate electrode 32 having a shroud 36 which leaves its ends 33 and 34 free, a gas passage 40 within the shroud, a gas supply port 41 connecting the passage 40 to a lumen protruding from the shroud in the proximal direction at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the electrode, and a cap 43 at the proximal end of the shroud forming a seal with the electrode. A conductive coating on the inside of the shroud may be connected to the electrode to eliminate electric potential across the passage. There may be complimentary hexagonal features on the electrode and cap to prevent relative rotation. The shroud may be injection moulded and the cap 43 overmoulded to the shroud and electrode.
