Abstract: A metallurgical vessel has a metal outer jacket (7), a refractory lining (8, 9) arranged inside the metal outer jacket (7) and an opening (1) which passes through the wall (3) of the vessel (4) and is used for the introduction of a lance-shaped piece of metallurgical equipment, preferably a measuring and/or sampling probe (2). In order to prevent plugging of the opening (1), the metallurgical vessel (4) has the following features: - the opening (1) is formed, as seen from the outside inwards, by a part (12) which tapers to a constricted region (11) and a part (13) which diverges from this constricted region (11), - the tapering part (12) is lined with a metal jacket (14) and - the diverging part (13) is formed by a refractory material (18), the heat resistance of which is higher than the heat resistance of the remainder of the refractory lining (8, 9) of the metallurgical vessel (4) (Fig. 2).

Abstract: A blowing lance to be used for the treatment of metallurgical melts includes a lance head having several expansion tuyeres directed to the bath level of the melt and penetrating a front plate of the lance head. They depart from at least one lance channel, which is peripherally surrounded by a supply channel and a return channel for a cooling medium. The supply channel is separated from the return channel by a flow deflection piece arranged above the front plate and penetrated by at least one connecting channel connecting the supply and return channels and provided for the cooling medium. In order to considerably increase the service life of the blowing lance and to avoid leakages in the front plate, at least one coolant secondary channel is provided in addition to the at least one connecting channel, which, upon branching off a partial stream of the coolant flowing to the connecting channel, diverts this partial stream into a flow direction deviating from the flow direction in the connecting channel and whose mouth is directed directly towards the center of the front plate.

Abstract: In a method of cooling a hot surface (5) a liquid cooling medium is atomized by a plurality of nozzles (9) in a hollow space (7) surrounding the surface (5) and open towards the atmosphere. The cooling medium only flows through the nozzles (9), preferably controlled by a triggered pressure reducing valve. In order to ensure uniform continuous, yet just sufficient cooling of the hot surface (5), with the cooling effect as constant a temperature as possible over an extended period of time while avoiding changing thermal expansions of the hot surface (5), the cooling medium is continuously atomized by means of nozzles (9) to a fine mist (12) having a droplet size range between 4 and 60 mu m, the mist (12) leaves the nozzles (9) at a low speed and is moved along the hot surface (5) within the hollow space (7) surrounding the hot surface (5) under utilization of the natural thermal current (13). The exit speed of the coolant from the nozzles is low, preferably in the range 10 - 30 m/sec. Condensate (16) may form on retaining means (15) and be removed via a discharge duct (17).
