Abstract: The present invention generally provides methods and apparatus for reduci ng noise in a detected electromagnetic wave used to telemeter data during a wellbore operation. In one embodiment, two surface antennae are placed on opposite sides of the wellbore and at the same distance from the wellbore. The signals from the two antennae are summed to reduce the noise in the electromagnetic signal transmitted from the electromagnetic downhole tool.

Abstract: Rotating tubular elements (10) associated with wellbores can become magnetised and thence induce noise into signals transmitted from downhole logging/measuring while drilling (LWD/MWD) devices (30, 32, 35). The inventors propose systems utilising multiple sensors in order to measure the noise so that it may be cancelled from the signal. In one particular system the magnetic field proximate to the tubular is measured and the processed to create a noise signal for cancelling. In another the electromagnetic signal receivers (151,152) are placed equidistant from and on opposite sides of the wellbore (10). Thus the noise induced by the rotating tubular should be in antiphase at each detector and the noise can be cancelled by simple summation.
