The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein R 1 represents a C 1-4 alkyl group, R 2 represents a benzyl group, unsubstituted or substituted by one or more halogen atoms, C 1-4 alkyl or C 1-4 alkoxy groups, and the preparation thereof by dethiolating the corresponding 7-mercapto derivative in the presence of Raney nickel. 7 - Mercapto - 2,4 - diamino - pyrido - [2,3-d]- pyrimidines corresponding to the Formula (I) may be prepared by the action of phosphorus pentasulphide on the corresponding 7-hydroxy derivative, or by the process of Specification 1,088,102. Therapeutic compositions with activity against gram-negative and gram-positive organisms, in the form of tablets, cachets, capsules, powders, granules, solutions, suspensions, emulsions, ointments and suppositories for oral, parenteral and topical application, comprise compounds of the Formula (I) together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
