    Abstract: The suction muffler has an inlet adjacent the refrigerant return line and is made of an insulating material. It is mounted on a pair of suction tubes secured to the cylinder head and extending into the interior of the muffler. A discharge muffler system includes a pair of large muffler chambers formed partially in a cylinder block and connected by an external transfer tube. A large straight passage connects the discharge plenum in the cylinder head with one muffler chamber, while a discharge line extends from the other muffler chamber to the exterior of the compressor casing. The inlet to the chambers is through a horizontal suction passage which opens to the exterior on the sidewall of the muffler shell.

    Abstract: A single horizontal cylinder, small refrigeration compressor has a lubrication arrangement which includes a recess on the cylinder block above the cylinder bore which collects oil that drains from the lower end of the motor. A supply passage extends downward from said recess and opens into the cylinder bore near its midpoint. The piston has an elongated shallow groove on the interior between head and skirt lands which is connected to the passage during a major portion of the piston stroke to receive oil from the recess. Drain passage means are provided on the piston to allow oil to flow out of the groove at a lesser rate than it is supplied by the supply passage from the recess.

    Abstract: A discharge valve assembly for a compressor includes a valve plate having a pair of projecting guideposts. A discharge port is located in said valve plate closer to one of the posts than the other post and a stop member is mounted on the guidepost to define a stop surface spaced from the surface of the valve plate. Between the stop member and the valve plate are a flat valve reed and a bowed valve spring, and the stop surface adjacent the guidepost nearest the valve seat is spaced farther from the valve plate than the stop surface adjacent the other guidepost.

The valve stop is held in place by an arcuate retaining spring having ends engaging notches in the valve plate and a projecting boss on a cylinder head defining a discharge valve plenum engages the retaining spring to press the spring and the valve plate into position within the recess to retain all of the parts in operating position.

    Abstract: A hermetic reciprocating piston refrigeration compressor has a high efficiency muffler system. The suction muffler has an inlet adjacent the refrigerant return line and is made of an insulating material.     Abstract: A suction valve for a small refrigeration compressor is in the form of a thin sheet metal reed having a sealing portion adapted to make sealing contact with a valve seat around the suction port on a valve plate. The valve reed is formed from a valve sheet by an outline defining cut so that the valve reed is integral with the sheet. The valve reed has a reduced width neck portion and in this neck portion the material is plastically deformed along a bend line so that in a normal unstressed condition the sealing portion of the reed is spaced away from the valve seat by a slight distance and as soon as the piston starts on the compression stroke the fluid pressure forces the sealing portion into sealing engagement to prevent back-flow through the suction port. When the piston starts the suction stroke, the biasing of the valve reed causes the sealing portion to move out of engagement with the valve seat before there is a substantial pressure differential across the suction valve. The compressor also has a reed-type discharge valve in which the valve head is normally inclined to the valve seat while making contact with the seat only at one point at the side of the valve head.
