Abstract: 14,706. Whittle, T. July 17. Course indicators ;logs. -Relates to more or less automatic apparatus for indicating upon a chart the approximate position of a ship throughout a voyage. For this purpose, as shown by Fig. 1, the chart is made with a slot, coinciding with the usual route between two ports, in which an indicator is adjusted by hand, or caused to travel, to indicate the position of the ship. The indicator may be driven from a log or from the engine. In the apparatus for this purpose shown by Fig. 3, the air-pump of the engine is used to close momentarily and periodically at the end of a certain number of strokes a switch to start a motor which drives a chain to which the indicator, working in the slot on the chart, is fixed. The apparatus is mounted at the back of the map so that the slots g in the plate h are immediately behind the slots in the route map, Fig. 1. The-motor f drives a sprocket-wheel f engaging with a chain d, which is led by suitable guidepulleys e along the slot g and carrier the indicator c, projecting through to the face of the map. An electro-magnetic switch H and a commutator E are fitted to control the circuits. When the starting-switch, already referred to as being closed momentarily at certain intervals by the action of the air-pump, is operated, it closes a circuit through the terminal 1, conductor s, starting-switch, terminal 2, terminal 3, contact-bobbin G, terminals 4, 5, commutator E, terminal 6, switch D, terminal 7, commutator E, terminal f , motor armature, terminal f , contact 9, commutator E, contact 10, motor field coils, terminal 16, and the battery t, back to. the starting-terminal 1. The establishment of this circuit starts the motor and by 'the electro-magnet G raises the armature B' and closes the switch B thus closing the shunt circuit through the terminal 1, switch A, bobbin H, terminal 12, switch B , and terminal 4. The switch A is opened when the motor has run for a certain time by contact with a pin f on the gear-wheel f . The bobbin H is thus de-energized, the switch B' opened, and the motor circuit thus broken, until the air-pump has again made the necessary number of strokes to operate the starting-switch. Switches C , D', mounted at the ends of the slots g, are opened by contact with the indicator as it reaches the end of its travel. The indicator may be adjusted by hand when desired, and the direction of its travel reversed.
