Abstract: A low force, low throw, touch operated switch comprising at least one flexible-contact element having a flexible portion and an electrical contact-making portion that is to be deflected into contact with at least one base element. The flexible portion has an effective dimension L and an equivalent spring constant in an axial direction. The contact-making portion is separated by a distance d from an associated base element which is chosen to be less than about 0.008 inch to provide low throw in the switch and to ensure substantially simultaneous and broad area electrical contacting and arc distribution between contact-making portion and base element. The length L is also selected so that the ratio d/L is less than about 0.02, so as to enhance the transverse deflection. The switch is rendered a low force device by selection of the equivalent axial spring constant so that with the d to L relationship just-mentioned the transverse force necessary to touch actuate the switch to produce electrical contact between the contact-making portion and the associated base contact is less than about 100 grams. Parallel contact operation for suitable current division is achieved through the use of a plurality of parallel and extended contact segments that constitute the contact-making portion of the element. Series gaps are utilized to aid in arc suppression and making and breaking of the electrical circuit by including the flexible-contact element as an intermediate element making contact with a plurality of base elements. A corrugated flexible-contact element structure is included to provide good spring action and to achieve a wiping effect to break welds that may be formed during contact closure. The flexible-contact element structure may be provided by a bowed plate with wires affixed thereto.

Abstract: 1,260,027. Retractive switches. WILD ROVER CORP. 12 Dec., 1969 [30 Dec., 1968], No. 60848/69. Heading H1N. A retractive switch comprises a flexible contact element having a flexible portion of effective length L and a plurality of contact segments, these being separated from a fixed contact by a distance, d, less than 0À008 inch, such that the ratio d/L is less than 0À02. In Fig. 3, the touch operated switch has a flexible plate 52a which has wires 54 fixed to it, these being positioned over two terminals 46, 48 and separated by less than 0À008 inch and preferably between 0À0025 and 0À004 inch. The plate 52 may be of brass with the wires 54 of silver cadmium oxide. The terminals 46 and 48 may be brass with a silver cadmium oxide coating. The plate rests on a ring 50 acting as a heat sink and has a disc, e.g. of phenolic resin, 56, placed over it and also a clear film 58, these being retained in position by a rim 40a. In Fig. 8 the flexible plate is replaced by a corrugated flexible element 90 having wires 92 fixed to the bottom peaks. A stabilizer plate 96, positioned over the member 90, is moved by an actuator 98, supported by springs 100, such that the wires bridge the terminals associated with screws 86, 88. The manner of attachment of the stabilizer plate to the element 90, Figs. 12-16 (not shown), affects its flexibility in both lateral and transverse directions. The corrugations of the contact member also affect the flexibility, Figs. 17-26 (not shown). More than one flexible member and more than two base terminals may be included in each switch assembly, this multipole assembly decreasing the possibility of arcing by increasing the number of series connected gaps.
