Abstract: A paper conditioner (100) to control image dependent curl which uses one or more counterrotating transfer rollers (102, 103) which are initially spaced from their respective back-up rollers (104, 105) in the intercopy gap, and which come together as the lead edge enters the nip area, and separates when the trail edge is about to pass. This permits the rollers to have a less demanding runout tolerance by bringing the rollers together when the sheet is in the nip, and then articulating the rollers apart in the intercopy gap.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce image-dependent curls by adding water content lost in fixing process. SOLUTION: Water is distributed to transfer rollers 102, 103 from reservoirs (sump) 110, 111. Contact of measuring rolls 108, 109 and the transfer rollers is manually adjusted by adjusting screws. The sump 111 must be corrected for an assembly of the upper transfer roller 103/measuring roll 109 to prevent water from dropping onto a sheet and producing an undesirable wetting characteristic. This is achievable by using a liquid dam in combination with the upper measuring roll 109, and providing an immersion nip immerged in water. As shown by an arrow mark 99, the sheet 52 and the transfer rollers 102, 103 are rotated in a reverse direction of feeding the sheet (a direction of rotation of backup rollers 104, 105 indicated by the arrow mark 999.
