Abstract: What is disclosed is a decoding method for retrieving information bits encoded in a printed image comprising the steps of first receiving an input electronic image as a scanned version of the printed image. A region of interest in the image is then extracted and, for that region, an amount of K colorant present, denoted KH; is obtained. Further, a color value is generated therefrom and the GCR used for encoding that region is determined using KH and the obtained color value. Encoded information bits are retrieved therefrom based on the determined GCR. The estimated KH is preferably evaluated conditional to a capacity signal KL and a luminance signal L. From the obtained data, values of KH , KL, and L, are derived wherein KH is estimated from a high resolution scan, and KL and L are estimated from a down-scaled image, respectively. The capacity signal KL and the luminance signal L are derived from the obtained color value. Further, the capacity signal, KL is derived by first applying a suitable operator S to reduce the image from scanner resolution to the watermark resolution and then converting the obtained color values to CMY estimates such that KL=min(C,M,Y) Alternatively, K-capacity is derived from the amount, KL, y, comprises first converting the obtained color values to CMY estimates and applying a suitable operator S to reduce the image from scanner resolution to the watermark resolution such that KL = min(S(C),S(M),S(Y)); wherein L is described by a linear combination of scan signals RGB, such that L = k1S(R) + k2S(G) + k3S(B). The value of KH is determined by first converting the obtained color values to CMY estimates. The estimates determine K-colorant amount at each pixel such that: K = min(C,M,Y). A suitable operator S is applied to reduce the image from scanner resolution to the watermark resolution.

Abstract: What is disclosed is a method for digital watermarking in a calibrated printing path and comprises: first receiving a pixel possessing color values from an input image; receiving a plurality of information bits to be encoded at a corresponding pixel in an output image. Then, one of at least two different GCR functions are selected where the selection is based on the state of the received information bits. The number of GCR functions to be selected from is dependent on the number of possible states of the information bits intended to be encoded at each image pixel and preferably equals the number of states of the information bits intended to be encoded at each image pixel such that the GCR spatially varies across the output image. Further, at least two GCR functions are optimized to carry information and information bits intended to be encoded within the output image are represented with a tag. CMYK values are then generated using the selected GCR function and the color values. These CMYK values are assigned to a corresponding pixel in the output image. The information bits to be encoded at a given pixel indicate the type of object to which that pixel belongs, such as: graphics, picture, text, line art, etc.. The output image, when printed, exhibits the property that substantially similar colors occurring at different spatial locations in the input image are produced with substantially different CMYK combinations in the print. Preferably, a parameterized function is used for the GCR function and the encoded state sets the parameter of the function. Information bits should be redundantly encoded throughout the output image. Regions that cannot be encoded by GCR information have to be compensated for. A reference mark is applied on the output image to indicate the starting point and order of the information sequence.

Abstract: A system 100 and method of displaying a digital colour image to a user 106, receiving a colour selection for modification and direction of change using a textual interface 104, receiving a magnitude and/or polarity of the colour modification using a swipe interface 142, applying the modification to portions of the image comprising the selected colour, and displaying the modified image to the user. The magnitude and polarity of the swipe interface is based on the amount of swipe motion by the user. Slot machine-style spin boxes 130, 132 may be used on the interface for rotating and scrolling through different options based on user clicks, touch swipes or device motion. The colour editing may appear to the user on the screen in real time. A natural language control (NLC) system may be used to allow the user to choose colours based on basic ordinary language dictionary colour terms that are parsed, converted and transformed into colour space values. The system may operate on touchscreen smartphones 102 and perform intuitive colour editing on the images 112 captured by the mobile devices built-in camera.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for converting color images to textured monochrome images such that image regions with similar luminance but different chrominance look different when converted to black-and-white to preserve color information therein. This texture-encoded color information can be extracted at a later time to reconstitute the original color image. The present method involves first converting the color image to a luminance-chrominance colorspace. The chrominance data is decomposed into 4 channels of chrominance. A wavelet transformation of the luminance channel is preformed. Scaled chrominance channels are then mapped to a number of wavelet sub-bands. Once mapped, the wavelet transform is inverted to generate textures proportional to the original colors of the color image having an amplitude proportional to the chroma of the original color. The black-and-white image is embedded with this texture information into the image's grayscale component. In order to retrieve the color image from the textured grayscale image, a wavelet transform regenerates the scaled chrominance channels mapped therein. Those wavelet sub-bands comprising embedded chroma are extracted and scaled to the size of the original image. The remaining sub-bands are inverted to produce the Y-image thereof. Separate images now exist in Y, Cr, and Cb. The recombination of the YCbCr images produce the colored image that was previously embedded into the grayscale components of the textured black-and-white image.

Abstract: A color printing process, printing a color image in which out-of-gamut original colors are present. For each pixel defined by an original color which is determined to be out of gamut, a gamut remapping process is applied to map each pixel to a color which is within a printer gamut, remapping said pixels to colors within an output printer gamut. For a given set of gamut remapped pixels, gamut remapped pixel colors are compared with said original pixel colors, to derive a comparison metric. Using the comparison metric, a corrected set of gamut remapped colors is generated. The comparison metric may be subjected to an adaptive filtering process, which strengthens the comparison metric in high frequency image regions to increase its impact on the gamut remapped colors, and weakens the comparison metric in low frequency areas, to weaken its impact on the gamut remapped colors.

Abstract: A method and system for colour calibration of a colour display device. A colour stimulus (such as a grey patch 706) is displayed on the display which a user adjusts using natural language commands until it appears to visually match a fixed reference stimulus (such as a 50% binary halftone pattern 702.) The colour stimulus may be displayed via a graphical user interface, GUI 700. Digital values of the adjusted colour stimulus are used to derive a calibration or correction function for the display. The calibration function can then be applied to produce corrected colours on the display device. The natural language command may be an instruction such as "make reference patch less purple" which enables the user to calibrate the display without the use of sliders or manual controls and does not require the user to understand colour mixing technology when making separate red, green and blue adjustments to match a specified patch. The invention is designed to make the colour adjustment process simpler and faster.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and system for providing a watermark (hidden information) in an image using extended colorant sets.
SOLUTION: The extended colorant set for watermarking is used when supporting a plurality of colorant recipes for rendering a given color. As watermark data to be encoded in the image change state with image position, alternate colorant recipes or colorant selection functions are selected. The image is rendered (displayed) based on the alternate colorant recipe selections. Watermark information is encoded in the colorant recipe or colorant selection function selection.
