Abstract: Electrographic recording apparatus in which the latent electrostatic charge patterns recorded on a dielectric recording medium are rendered visible substantially coextensive with the deposition of the charge patterns on the recording medium. The recording medium is transported in a generally vertical direction at the charging zone. The array of charging electrodes are disposed from the record medium at the charging zone at a negative inclination relative to horizontal to form a ramp comprising a portion of the developer system. A second ramp is disposed from the recording medium at the charging zone at a positive inclination relative to horizontal, comprising another portion of the developer system. The positively inclined ramp is further situated in a manner such that developer material will be transported down the ramp in substantially uniform quantities to contact the recording medium. As the developer material contacts the recording medium, toner from the developer material will be attracted to the latent electrostatic charge patterns to render the charge patterns visible. Unused portions of the developer material after contacting the record medium are then transported down the ramp formed by the electrode array to a developer reservoir. By thus utilizing the electrode array as a portion of the overall developer path the development zone may be substantially coextensive with the charging zone thereby permitting rapid viewing of the recorded information.

Abstract: A flying spot scanning system is provided by utilizing reflected light from a multifaceted rotating polygon which is then directed to the scanned medium. A light source illuminates at least one of the facets of the polygon during each scanning cycle to provide the spot scan. In each scanning cycle, information is transmitted to scanned medium by modulating the light from the light source in accordance with a video signal. To assure a uniform spot size at the scanned medium, an optical convolution of elements is selected in combination with the light source such that an adequate depth of focus at the medium is assured. An imaging lens is provided in series with a lens, which expands an original light beam, to converge the expanded beam to illuminate the selected facet or contiguous facets that are to control the movement of a spot throughout a scan angle. In the preferred embodiment, the rotation of the polygon is synchronized in phased relation to the scan rate used to obtain the video signal.

Abstract: A sheet guide position sensor which determines the dimensions of a stack of sheets (54) in a tray (100) having adjustable sheet guides (102). An optical sensor (110) is arranged so that movement of a sheet guide (102) causes a variably graduated scale (104) to be moved past the sensor (110). The sensor (110) may either be a transmissive or reflective type analog sensor in which the strength of the signal generated by the sensor is converted into a position of the sheet guides. A recalibration process is used to prevent contamination of the scale from causing the size determinations by the sensor to be inaccurate. In one embodiment, a digital sensor in cooperation with a digital bar code (Fig.5) or other digital scale can be utilized to determine the variable sheet size, since the digital sensor is insensitive to contamination by dirt or paper particles, etc. In another embodiment, a wiper member (140; Fig.4) is used to clean the variably graduated scales (104).

Abstract: A binary ink drop printer is disclosed of the type wherein continuously generated drops are electrostatically deflected to intersect either a target or a gutter. The printer includes M x N number of nozzles for generating drops and a like number of charging electrodes for charging drops to either a print level for flight to the target or a gutter level for flight to a gutter. A M x Nmatrix is used to couple voltages to the charging electrodes and thereby greatly reduce the number of electrical connections to a substrate carrying the M x N number of charging electrodes. Each charging electrode includes two sections. Application of a print voltage to both sections causes the generation of a print drop that goes to the target and application of a gutter voltage to either or both sections of the charging electrode causes the generation of a gutter drop that is collected in the gutter. One two section electrode is made using at least two partial cylinders. Another two section electrode is made by coupling a single electrode to a voltage divider network.
