    Abstract: In an electrostatographic copying system wherein an image is transferable from an image support surface to a copy utilizing an electrically biased transfer roller positionable thereagainst, the transfer roller conductive core is divided along its axis into electrically discrete cylindrical segments, and commonly covered with an electrically relaxable elastomer layer. An electrical bias circuit provides discrete electrical bias supplies for these core segments, whereby a central segment can be connected to a constant current (variable voltage) source, and end segments slaved to the voltage level on the central segment to prevent roll and leakage in no copy areas from adversely affecting the constant current source.

    Abstract: An electrostatographic printing apparatus comprises a charge receptor (10), and a transfer station for transferring a toner image from the charge receptor (10) to a sheet (S). The sheet passes through a nip formed between the charge receptor (10) and a moving transfer belt (30). Upstream of the nip, the belt (30) forms a shallow angle relative to the charge receptor (10), downstream of the nip, the belt (30) forms a steep angle relative to the charge receptor (10). This configuration enables self-stripping of the sheet from the transfer belt at the exit of the nip.

    Abstract: An intermediate transfer belt with a mechanically and electrically invisible seam formed by joining two ends of the belt at a seam. Two regions of the belt are thus formed, a seam region at and around the seam and a far region away from the seam. The seam region has good electrical property correspondence (as explained in the patent) with the far region and a lateral resistivity greater than 10 ohms/square. The joining of the belt can occur along a kerf.

    Abstract: An apparatus for developing a latent image recorded on a surface, including a housing defining a chamber storing a supply of developer material including toner and carrier beads. A toner donor member is spaced from the surface and is adapted to transport toner to a region opposed from the surface. A magnetic roller conveys the toner material in the chamber of the housing onto the donor member. An electrode member is spaced near the surface of a donor roll, the electrode member electrically biased by a power supply to detach toner from the donor member as to form a toner cloud for developing the latent image. A power supply controller, in communication with the power supply, is adapted to adjust the electrode member electrical biasing to avoid air breakdown induced contamination of the electrode member with toner.

    Abstract: An apparatus for enabling a conductive backed photoconductive intermediate transfer member in an electrophotographic printing apparatus with pre-charge and light assist. The printing apparatus includes a toner transfer system having an intermediate transfer belt comprising a highly conductive transparent substrate with a charging device and an illumination lamp. The intermediate transfer belt is pre-charged prior to entering a transfer nip region to generate low or reverse fields therein. Subsequently, the photoconductive layer of the intermediate surface is exposed to light energy to discharge the pre-charge thereon, generating high transfer fields in the transfer nip.
