    Abstract: A cartridge (10), such as a cartridge for filling with ink for use in ink jet printhead includes a housing (12) enclosing a wick chamber (22). The housing (12) includes a top wall (14). The housing (12) also includes an ink chamber (24). A conduit (30) connects the ink chamber (24) and the wick chamber (22). The outer surface of the top wall (14) of the housing is formed with a recess (70). A vent opening (60) through the top wall (14) of the wick chamber (22), at the recess (70), provides communication between the wick chamber (22) and the recess (70). A covering (80) over the top surface of the housing (12) encloses the recess (70). An outlet opening (40) through an outer wall (18) other than the top wall (14) of the wick chamber (22) provides liquid communication for the ink to flow from the wick chamber (22). One end of an overflow tube (82) is in communication with the recess (70) in the top wall (14) of the housing. The other end of the overflow tube (82) opens to the ambient environment at another point on the exterior of the housing, such as near the outlet opening (40). A dam (90) in the recess (70), between the vent opening (60) and the one end of the overflow tube (82) impedes, but does not completely obstruct the flow of spillover ink from the vent opening (60) into the overflow tube (82).

    Abstract: A media transport system (100) for transporting a media sheet (110) in a marking device includes an entrance drive assembly (104), an exit drive assembly (126) and a vacuum generator (114, 116, 118, 120) that applies a vacuum force to the media sheet (110) to form a wide, flat printing zone. The entrance drive assembly (104) receives and transports the media sheet (110) in a process direction by contacting top and bottom surfaces of the media sheet thereby exerting an entrance drive force on the media sheet. The exit drive assembly (126) receives and transports the media sheet by contacting the top and bottom surfaces of the media sheet, thereby exerting an exit drive force on the media sheet. The vacuum force is applied to the media sheet in an area of the media sheet between the entrance drive assembly (104) and the exit drive assembly (126). The vacuum force on the media sheet (110) acts in a vacuum force direction substantially normal to the process direction. The vacuum force is set such that the entrance drive force and the exit drive force in the process direction each exceed the vacuum force acting in the vacuum force direction.

    Abstract: An ink tank and ink tank support structure which contains structural elements which are designed to permit proper installation of the ink tank in the ink tank support structure while minimizing the chances of improper installation of the ink tank in the ink tank structure. A primary ink tank seal is provided in the ink tank, and a relatively low compressive force seal is provided between the ink tank support structure and the ink tank to reduce leakage of fluid from the tank and limit evaporation of fluid from the tank despite repeated insertions and removals of the ink tank from the ink tank support structure. A variable capacity ink tank and an ink tank with staggered height walls are disclosed, as well as a code reader for determining characteristics of ink tanks.
