    Abstract: A system and method for manually removably locking a paper handling (20) module to a reproduction apparatus (10) with greatly reduced manual force, wherein the reproduction apparatus and the paper handling module have respective sheet feed openings which are operatively aligned for sheet feeding therebetween when the module (20) is so locked to the reproduction apparatus in a locking position, and wherein the paper handling module has a weight which is undesirable for manual lifting into the locking position. The module (20) is supported on an integral module transporting system (26-33) to be freely movable in any horizontal direction into an initial docking position closely adjacent to the reproduction apparatus (10). Then, slightly vertically lifting at least one side of the module (20) with only a small vertical manual lifting force while most of the weight of the module is lifted with an automatic weight lifting system (34, 35), moving the module towards the locking position, and then removing the small vertical manual lifting force from the module, to drop and lock the module to the reproduction apparatus (10). The automatic weight lifting may be provided by vertically movably spring (34) loading at least one side of the module on the module transporting system (26-33).

    Abstract: A sheet inverting and stacking system in which a rotatable sheet stacking unit receives the lead edge area of an incoming sheet and then rotates and releases that lead edge area of the sheet at a lead edge registration positi on for stacking the sheet inverted in a set of stacked sheets at least partially on a stacking tray in a stacking area; with a movable sheet registration system providing plural sheet lead edge registration positions; a sheet set fastening system (stapler) for fastening the stacked sets; a first registration position f or set fastening in which the sheet stacking area extends into the sheet set fastening system and a second registration position in which the sheet stacking is in fron t of the sheet fastening system, to provide two different initial sheet leading ed ge stacking positions and one final stacking position. The rotatable sheet stacking unit is interdigitating with the movable registration system to carry the sheet lead edge directly into the first or second registration positions and also into the sheet fastening system in the first registration position. The stapler is under and at least partially inside of the rotatable sheet stacking unit, and the rotatabl e sheet stacking unit slots carry the lead edge area of the incoming sheet directl y up to the first registration position and into the stapler before releasing it. The sheet lead edge retaining slots have low force retaining spring members which lightly hold the lead edge of the sheet against one side of the slot.

    Abstract: An apparatus in which a sheet (102) is registered during the movement thereof. The sheet is moved along a path in a forward direction of movement and a lateral direction of movement substantially normal thereto by means of skewed driving and idler rollers (90, 76). The lateral movement of the sheet causes the side edge of the sheet to engage a registration edge (88) so as to be aligned thereat. The drive roller (90) extends into the gap between spaced idler rollers (76) to form a bend (106) in the sheet. The magnitude of the moving force applied on the sheet is proportional to the extent of the bending which in turn depends on the thickness of the sheet. In this way, the moving force varies as a function of the thickness of the sheet with the sheet slipping laterally when engaging the registration edge to prevent buckling thereof.

    Abstract: A printer (10) for printing images from a photoconductor (28) onto copy sheets (60) and tab stock (71) includes stalled roller registration nip (91,92) in a copy sheet path. The printer has a special materials tray (72) and a sheet feeder (73-75) for feeding tab stock from the tray to the paper path. Dual sensors (81,82) connected to an AND gate (85) are positioned in line across the paper path downstream of the special materials feeder (72) to sense the feeding of tab stock (71) and send a signal to a controller (100) which stops the sheer feed. Once a signal is received by the controller that an image is in a particular position on the photoconductor (28), the sheet feeder is started again by the controller (100) with the roller registration nip (91,92) operating at process speed as well. When standard copy sheets are fed from conventional paper trays, the stalled roller registration nip (91,92) operates to stall and register copy the sheets before they are fed to the U photoconductor.
