Abstract: A heater (50) is disposed in a post-print location of an ink printer (10) to provide a post-print drying of an ink image formed on a recording medium (16). The heater (50) includes a foil circuit (52) made of a material which, when receiving an applied power from a power source (56), emits radiation in the infrared range. The heater (50) is located above the paper path and presents a rapid uniform application of IR radiation to predetermined areas of the recorded image resulting in fast, efficient drying of the image and enabling a high productivity printer.

Abstract: Disclosed is a printing process which comprises applying in imagewise fashion to a substrate an ink composition which comprises an aqueous liquid vehicle, a colorant, and an ionic compound at least partially ionizable in the liquid vehicle, said ink composition having a conductivity of at least about 10 milliSiemens per centimeter, and subsequently exposing the substrate to microwave radiation, thereby drying the images on the substrate. A specific embodiment of the invention is directed to a thermal ink jet printing process which comprises (1) incorporating into a thermal ink jet printing apparatus an ink composition which comprises an aqueous liquid vehicle, a colorant, and an ionic compound at least partially ionizable in the liquid vehicle, said ink composition having a conductivity of at least about 10 milliSiemens per centimeter; (2) heating the ink in an imagewise pattern to cause bubbles to form therein, thereby causing droplets of the ink to be ejected in an imagewise pattern onto a substrate, thereby generating images on the substrate; and (3) exposing the substrate to microwave radiation, thereby drying the images on the substrate.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a paper sheet from burning when the paper sheet stays for a long time at a drying assembly for drying a liquid ink of images on the paper sheet. SOLUTION: A burning-preventing drying assembly 60 has inside a heating element 66 for drying the liquid ink which forms images on the sheet. The assembly 60 also has a device 62 for moving the air to blow the air to the sheet sent to the assembly 60. The paper sheet is cooled by the air sent by the device 62 and prevented from reaching a burning temperature.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer equipped with an infrared-ray foil heater which rapidly dries an ink image formed previously on a recording medium moved along the route of paper. SOLUTION: The printer prints on a recording medium passed through at least one printing area 38 and the following one printing area. The printer is equipped with a printing head 12 which sticks ink by a pattern preset on the recording medium 16, a foil heater 50 arranged in such a position that it does not come into contact with the recording medium of the upper part of the recording medium moved just under the foil heater within the following printing area, a foil heater circuit 52 having length and width selected so as to coincide with the preset area of a recorded image, and a power source 56 feeding current to the foil heater 50 so as to generate radiation output in an infrared-ray area. Thereby, uniform radiation is supplied to the above preset area of the recorded image.
