    Abstract: A transmissive, backlit color twisted-nematic or super-twisted-nematic liquid crystal display employing a front fiber-optic faceplate (28) as a front retaining element of a liquid crystal cell (18) that increases viewing angle between the display and a viewer while minimizing or eliminating undesirable variations in luminance, contrast ratio and chromaticity is described. This novel configuration effectively decouples the liquid crystal cell (18) and other optical elements (12,14,16) behind the front fiber optic faceplate from the angular orientation of the viewer with respect to the display. The liquid crystal display described in this invention further provides a high quality color display, without viewing parallax, using a color selection filter mosaic (30) outside of the liquid crystal cell. The display also increases luminous efficiency and improves color saturation by concentrating the transmission of available backlight illumination through the use of a rear fiber-optic faceplate (32) and a second rear-mounted mosaic (34) of color interference filters.

    Abstract: A full color electronic display device using two liquid crystal light valve image forming sources and having two optical paths (Y,R + G;B) is disclosed. The device is suitable for use in projection or direct view display applications. The two-path LCLV device generates two separate, spatially coherent color images which are combined by additive spatial superposition to produce a single, full-spectrum, composite color image. One image is composed from a spectral band of light from the long (red) and medium (green) wavelength regions of the visible light spectrum, and is formed by a liquid crystal image forming source (20,32-36) having a high resolution which determines the effective spatial resolution of the final image. The second image is composed from a spectral band of light from the short (blue) wavelength region of the visible light spectrum, and is formed by a liquid crystal image forming source (20,40-44) having a resolution less than that of the red and green image, thereby producing a brighter blue light image. These two optical paths (Y,R+G;B) and their properties are nominally matched to the characteristics of the chromatic and luminance processing channels of the human visual system. The images are received in image combining means (50) which carries out additive spatial superposition to form a composite full colour image. The device produces bright, sharp, and high resolution full-color images using a relatively simple, more easily aligned optical system. The composite image may be either directly viewed or optically projected using a conventional projection lens assembly onto an intermediate viewing surface.

The fiber-optic faceplate or optical equivalent includes cylindrical optical features and interstitial cladding material of greater optical index than the cylindrical optical features. The interstitial cladding material may include an opaque mask blocking layer to prevent the interstitial apertures from diffracting off-axis light into an observer's viewing cone. In particular the liquid crystal display includes dual negative retarders, and a light shaping element such as a brightness enhancing film on the illumination source that increase the effective viewing angle between the display and a viewer while minimizing undesirable variations in display chromaticity, luminance, and contrast ratio. The front fiber-optic faceplate or optical equivalent works in conjunction with the dual negative retarders and the light shaping element to provide an improved contrast ratio with a perfectly symmetric viewing angle and to eliminate grey scale inversions.

    Abstract: A non-polarising, Bragg-reflecting liquid crystal display is provided including a first (13) and second (14,28) substrate, and liquid crystal material (40) located between the first substrate (13) and the second substrate (14, 28). A fiber-optic faceplate (50) may function as a first substrate. Alternatively, a fiber-optic faceplate (50) may be located on the side of the first substrate (13) opposite from the liquid crystal layer (40). The fiber-optic faceplate (50) may include optical fibers that extend between a front face and a rear face and fiber cladding materials located between the optical fibers. The fiber cladding material may be further opaquely masked on the front face.
