    Abstract: PURPOSE: A hybrid electrode fluorescent lamp and a backlight employing the same are provided to connect a plurality of fluorescent lamps in parallel to a single power supply for preventing the power consumption due to the disagreement of synchronization of driving waves between adjacent fluorescent lamps. CONSTITUTION: A hybrid electrode fluorescent lamp includes a glass tube(11) doped with a fluorescent layer(12) on an inner peripheral surface and injected charge gas inside to be sealed, a cold cathode type electrode(13) disposed in a side of the glass tube, and an external electrode(14) formed of a conductive material and surrounding an end of an external peripheral surface of the other side of the glass tube.

Nov. 27, 1930, No. 35716. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1929. [Class 39 (i).] A cathode glow is produced in a narrow elongated passage formed in the cathode and open at both ends, the anode being in close proximity to one end of the passage, and the beam projected from the other end. As shown in Fig. 2, the cathode 25 has a cvlindrical passage 27 and a cup-shaped extension 26 within which a disc or plate anode 28, mounted in insulating cement 30, is spaced by an insulator 29. The cup is supported by metal strips 24 from a collar 23. In a modification, the cathode consists of a metal tube embedded in insulating material in which the anode is mounted. As shown in Fig. 8, the cathode consists of a metal thimble 44 cooled by an internal circulation of liquid and having a capillary opening 45, at one end of which the anode 28 is mounted; or the cathode may consist of an externally threaded cylinder mounted in the thimble. In other modifications, (a) the cathode has heat-radiating plates, (b) the passage consists of a narrow slit of rectangular section, and (c) the anode had a conical recess.
