Abstract:
Apparatus for powder spray coating comprises means (4) for electrostatically-charging powder entrained in air, a conduit (6) for transporting the electrostatically charged powder from the charging means (4) to an internal chamber (12) in a spray head (8), the spray head (8) having at least one passage (16) from the internal chamber (12) to at least one nozzle (17) from which the powder is discharged, and a deflector (18) mounted externally of the spray head (8) and adjacent to the or each nozzle (17) to deflect the discharged powder into a flat spray pattern, the spray head (8) and the flat spray pattern being substantially symmetrical about a common longitudinal axis. The apparatus is particularly suitable for coating a large surface area, or a plurality of small objects hung in a planar array. Preferably multiple triboelectric type charging means (4) are used and a single pump is used to supply powder to the multiple charging means through a common distributor. After passing through the multiple charging means (4) the powder flows are then recombined and sprayed through a common nozzle.
Abstract:
Apparatus for mounting and moving coating dispensers (36) within the interior of a spray booth (10), and particularly the coating dispensers (36) located above an object (30) moving through the booth (10). A first embodiment comprises a dispenser housing (38) having an aerodynamically shaped outer surface (58) formed with a leading edge (60), a trailing edge (62) and opposed generally curved sides (64, 66). A second embodiment includes a dispenser housing (220) having an outer surface with a convexly curved leading edge (251), flat side walls (253, 253a) and a flat bottom wall (255). One or more coating dispensers (221-226, 231-235) are mounted at the trailing edge of the dispenser housings (220, 230) in a position to discharge coating material downwardly onto the object (211). A collision detector (303) is also provided to shut the system down in the event of a collision between the apparatus (210) and an object (211) within the booth.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a powder spraying device for electrostatic powder coating of workpieces. In order to achieve a particularly good powder particle charge, the powder spraying device (10) contains a chamber (1) into which a powder/air mixture (PL) is introduced crosswise to the spraying device (13) by means of a feed pipe (11). A ground electrode (5) and multiple high-voltage electrodes (7) are placed in the chamber (1). All electrodes (5, 7) are swept by purified air (RLE, RLH) in order to prevent powder deposits.
Abstract:
A spray gun for powder coating of a workpiece has a powder and compressed air delivery tube (16) comprising a first part (18) in or associated with a handle (12) of the gun and a second part (20) communicating with the first part and at an angle thereto for delivering the powder to a nozzle (40) of the gun, wherein the first part of the tube has a continuation beyond its junction with the second part to provide a space (28) where powder can collect to form a cushion of powder to facilitate flow of powder around the angle of the junction.
Abstract:
Apparatus for powder spray coating comprises means (4) for electrostatically-charging powder entrained in air, a conduit (106) for transporting the electrostatically charged powder from the charging means (4) to a spray head (108) adapted to discharge the powder in a hollow conical spray pattern, wherein the spray head (108) comprises means for diverting at least a portion of the flow of charged powder towards a spray device mounted to the spray head (108) and adapted to discharge powder in a substantially uniform conical spray pattern, the spray head (108), spray device and the hollow conical and conical spray patterns being substantially symmetrical about a common longitudinal axis. The apparatus is particularly suitable for coating a large surface area. Preferably multiple tribo-electric charging means (4) are used and a pump is used to supply powder to the multiple charging means the powder flows are then recombined and sprayed through a common spray apparatus. The apparatus may include multiple powder sources and means to change rapidly the powder being sprayed from one powder source to another.
Abstract:
An electrostatic spray gun comprises at least one external corona discharge electrode (11) positioned so as to charge a stream of particulate matter entrained in a gas flow. Where the stream of particulate matter leaves the gun, the gun comprises a metal tube (7) charged to the same voltage as the corona discharge electrode (11) and through which tube (7) the particulate matter must pass prior to passing the electrode (11). In a preferred embodiment (not shown here) the electrode takes the form of a deflector which turns the stream of particulate matter through about 90 DEG . The spray guns of the invention may be used for the spraying of hygroscopic materials such as sodium diacetate.
