Abstract:
Abstract:
Substantially homogeneous acrylate/maleate copolymers of number average molecular weight of 500 to 5000 are prepared by copolymerizing 35 to 65 mole percent acrylic or methacrylic acid (or a mixture thereof) with 65 to 35 mole percent maleic anhydride at over a period of from 0.3 to 10 hours at 80 to 150°C in the presence of specified quantities of a polymerization initiator and a chain-transfer solvent, the solvent and mode of addition of the monomers to the solvent being such that both the monomers and the formed co-polymer remain in solution and the mole ratio of the acrylic or methacrylic acid monomer to the maleic anhydride monomer in the solvent is maintained at from 0.005 to 0.2 throughout the polymerization. Also included are substantially homogeneous copolymers consisting essentially of from 35 to 65 mole percent acrylic or methacrylic acid units (or a mixture thereof) and from 65 to 35 mole percent maleic anhydride units and having a number average molecular weight of from 500 to 5000. The copolymers in hydrolyzed form are particularly useful in the prevention of alkaline calcium and magnesium scale formation, such as during sea-water evaporative desalination.
Abstract:
The precipitation and deposition of alkaline-earth metal scales in an aqueous system is inhibited by comprising adding to the system an anionic polyelectrolyte and an anionic surfactant, the weight ratio of polyelectrolyte to surfactant being in the range from 1000:1 to 1:10. Compositions containing the electrolyte and surfactant in that ratio are novel.
Abstract:
A method is described for removing corrosion products formed in situ, transported corrosion products, iron staining from water, which resides on fixtures, and unwanted materials trapped within and/or in association with corrosion products from iron, steels, and copper, alloys of these metals and from other surfaces, specifically including glasses, plastics, elastomers, ceramics, tiles and porcelains. The method comprises contacting corroded sufaces and/or surfaces supporting corrosion products with an aqueous composition containing citric acid or its salts, at least one organophosphonate or its salts, and at least one water-soluble polymer or its salts. A corrosion inhibitor may be included in the composition. One or more alkali metal or alkaline earth metal or ammonium hydroxides may be included for adjusting the pH, and/or for controlling the kinetics of the removal method. Enhancements such as abrasives, coloring agents and odorizers may also be included.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to compositions and methods for removing water scale from surfaces and preventing redeposition. The composition comprises a hydroxycarboxylic acid, an alkanolamine and an alkali metal monocyclic aryl sulfonate. Heat-exchange systems utilizing water as heat-exchange medium are operated by incorporating a minor amount of this composition in the circulating water.
Abstract:
Maleate polymers and derivatives of maleate polymers containing specified functional groups are effective scale inhibitors, particularly for calcium phosphate scale.
Abstract:
Substantially homogeneous (methlacrylic acid/itaconic acid copolymers of number average molecular weight of 500 to 7000 are prepared by copolymerizing in aqueous solution 5 to 90 mole percent acrylic or methacrylic acid monomer with 95 to 10 mole percent itaconic acid monomer at 80 to 120°C in the presence of a polymerization initiator, the acrylic or methacrylic acid monomer and at least half of the initiator being added separately and continuously to the itaconic acid monomer throughout the polymerization period. The copolymers are employed at a level of from about 0.1 to 100 ppm for prevention of alkaline calcium and magnesium scale formation, such as during seawater evaporative desalination.
Abstract:
A process for the removal of deposits consisting essentially of the oxides of one or more transition metals from a surface, which process comprises contacting the said surface at pH below 7.0 with a reagent comprising a one-electron reducing agent which is a low oxidation state transition metal ion in combination with a complexing agent which is thermally stable at a operating pH. The process is particularly suitable for decontaminating the cooling system or a component associated with the cooling system of a water-cooled nuclear reactor, or other contaminated plant items.
Abstract:
The invention concerns a cleaner for drinking water systems containing deposits such as limescale, grease, iron or manganese-containing ochre incrustations, the cleaner comprising citric acid and foodstuffs preservatives. The cleaner is characterized in that, in a pack in solid form, it comprises a combination of between 90 and 99 wt.%, preferably between 95 and 98 wt.%, citric acid, between 0.3 and 10 wt.%, preferably between 0.3 and 1 wt.%, of at least one foodstuffs preservative and between 1 and 4 wt.% of at least one surfactant, and optionally an antifoaming agent in a pack. The total of all the percentages is 100. The invention further concerns a method of cleaning drinking water systems and the use thereof.
