Abstract: In a method of liquefying glass batch the initial step of melting glass, converting particulate batch materials to a partially melted, liquefied state, is carried out on a support surface of batch. As liquefied batch is drained from the surface, additional batch is fed onto the surface to maintain the volume of the stable mass of batch substantially constant.

Abstract: A forehearth for a glass furnace includes a roof formed of a plurality of roof blocks (22) designed to provide below the roof blocks a central longitudinal channel (36) and side channels (38, 40) on each side of the central channel. An electric heating element (60) is positioned in a bore (62) in the roof blocks substantially directly above the side channels (38, 40) to permit radiation of heat to the glass surface above the side channels (38, 40). The temperature of the molten glass utilizing the construction can be effectively uniformly controlled across its cross-section.
