Abstract:
The start-up of a rotating disk file is controlled by first moving the sliders (30, 32, 40, 42) supporting the read/write leads radially outwards from the inside diameter (20) of the disks (10, 12, 14) by applying a voltage from voltage source (70) to voice coil motors (34, 44), sensing the position of the sliders (30, 32, 40, 42) on the disk surfaces with a position sensor (80), initiating rotation of the disk drive motor (18) when the sliders (30, 32, 40, 42) have moved a dewetting distance, and terminating radial translation of the sliders (30, 32, 40, 42) when the disk drive motor (18) has reached operating speed and the sliders (30, 32, 40, 42) are riding on air bearings above the disks. The instrumented radial translation of the sliders (30, 32, 40, 42) overcomes the stiction forces at the slider-disk interface without damage to the read/write heads, the disks (10, 12, 14) or the slider suspensions (36, 38, 46, 48).
Abstract:
A magnetic head assembly comprises an air-bearing slider 10 carrying two pole pieces P1, P2 surrounded by insulating material 12, 14, 18, 20 and 22. A read/write spiral coil 16 is connected by conductor 28 to a stud 26 and external connector 24. Electrostatic charge can accummulate in the insulating material and to prevent discharge of this charge via the pole pieces P1, P2 and alternative discharge path is provided. This path is provided by buried conductor (not shown) extending from the stud 26 to the edge of the insulating layer 12. This conductor forms part of the alternative discharge path, marked desirable discharge path. The path is completed by the spark discharge gap between the conductor and the conductive slider 10 which is connected to earth. The resistance of the desirable discharge path is made substantially less than that of the undesirable discharge path via the pole pieces.
Abstract:
In an apparatus having a record mode for recording video or other information signals in successive parallel information tracks on a record tape by means of a plurality of rotary heads repeatedly scanning across said tape and having respective gaps with different azimuth angles, and in which the apparatus is changeable to a playback mode for causing each of said heads to provide a respective output when it is scanning an information track in which information signals have been previously recorded by a head with a gap having the same azimuth angle; clogging of one or more of the head gaps which would prevent further recording is detected, in the playback mode, by switching from one to another of the outputs of the heads during each period required forthe scanning of the tape by each of the heads, detecting the levels of the head outputs during such switching therebetween, and operating a clog indicator when the detected levels of the head outputs are insufficient during the scanning of the tape by each of the heads. In order to avoid a false clog indication, the operation of the clog indicator is inhibited when the usual fixed head does not reproduce control signals in the playback mode, for example, as when there has been no previous recording of information signals on the record tape.
Abstract:
A magnetic disk drive apparatus provided with a protecting cover covering the same generally comprises a base, magnetic disks mounted on a rotary shaft rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator movably attached to the base. To one end of the actuator are rotatably attached suspensions which are provided with magnetic heads at the free ends thereof respectively. The magnetic disk drive apparatus further comprises a shaft rotatably supported by the protecting cover and vertically extending through an upper surface of the cover and a stop member secured to a lower portion of the shaft inside the cover for restricting the movement of the actuator at a locking position thereof. The shaft is also connected to an operating mechanism so that the stop member will take a locking or unlocking position for the actuator.
Abstract:
The temperatur of a magnetic head assembly is reduced by active heat transfer accomplished by a thermoelectric cooling element (28) positioned between and in contact with a wall (20) of the head assembly housing (14) and a write head module (10) of the head assembly. The housing serves as a heat sink from which thermal energy is diffused.
