    Abstract: In overhead cable networks, additional communication cables for transmitting information required to operate the network can be incorporated in the power cable. If these communication cables consist of optical transmission elements, the latter must be protected against crushing when the cable is fixed in clamps. The cross-section of the overhead cables with guard wire is such that a few wires (1, 2, 3, 4) in the strands form an inextensible and transversely incompressible skeleton in the interstices of which communication cables, in particular optical transmission elements (5, 6, 7), are accommodated. The overhead cable with guard wire can be used in a construction of overhead cable networks.

    Abstract: Metal wires (1) are twisted into several layers (7, 8, 9) around a core (2) in order to obtain a cable for overhead lines. Reinforcing elements (3, 4) are located between the wires (1) and are twisted with them at the same pitch. The reinforcing elements (3, 4) are non-distortable bars having a rigid structure and consist of reinforcing fibres and a hardening reactive resin. The reinforcing elements (3, 4) are completely surrounded by metal wires (1) and are protected against ultra-violet radiation.

    Abstract: Electric fence tape and fence wire are used by graziers for strip grazing. In order to reduce resistance several conductor strands are used in both tape and wire but these are prone to breakage without warning. Stainless steel is favoured but is only a modest electrical conductor. Mixtures of stainless steel conductors 10 which resist tensile stress and copper conductors 8 which improve electrical conductivity are disclosed. Likewise mixtures of stainless steel and aluminium wires are disclosed. Ratios of copper to stainless of 25 to 75% are favoured with an example of three copper and six stainless wires. The mix of wires is incorporated into a woven or knitted tape; a braided ribbon or a unidirectionally twisted cord. A feature of both tape and wire is the use of white textile strands rather than the formerly used colours orange and yellow. The advantage is greater visibility coupled with much increased conduction for larger sized fields and strips.

    Abstract: ) An overhead electric conductor comprises a central tubular metal core 52, at least one layer 55 of helically wound bare metal wires surrounding the core and, loosely housed in the bore of the core, at least one optical fibre element 11. The optical fibre element 11 comprises a flexible tube 17 of elongate transverse cross-section in which is loosely housed an optical fibre ribbon structure 12 and which is resiliently set in such a form that it follows a path of smoothly curved undulations, the axes of curvature of which lie parallel to one another and normal to the axis of the tube. Should a tensile force applied to the overhead conductor be transferred to the loosely housed optical fibre element, the flexible tube of the element will tend to straighten in a lengthwise direction against the action of its resilient set thereby to reduce any tensile force that might otherwise be applied to the optical fibres and, when the tensile force is removed, the tube will return under the action of its resilient set towards its original form.

    Abstract: An electric conductor suitable for use in an overhead electrical and optical transmission system comprises a layer or layers 35 of helically wound wires, at least one elongate compartment 36 within and extending throughout the length of the conductor and, loosely housed in the elongate compartment, at least one optical fibre ribbon structure 37 comprising a plurality of optical fibres 1 and flexible elongate reinforcing elements 2 of resilient material arranged side by side and embedded in an elongate body 3 of plastics material, each resilient reinforcing element being set in such a form that the ribbon structure follows a path of smoothly curved undulations whose axes of curvature lie parallel to one another and normal to the longitudinal axis of the ribbon structure. If, when the conductor is installed or in service, the undulating ribbon structure 37 is subjected to a tensile force, the ribbon structure will straighten in a lengthwise direction against the action of the undulating resilient reinforcing elements 2 thereby reducing the tensile force otherwise applied to the optical fibres 1 and, when the tensile force is removed, the ribbon structure will return towards its original undulating form.
