Abstract: An apparatus for generating a time-delayed product of two independent signals includes a fixed-wavelength laser. A first optical modulator is optically coupled to the fixed-wavelength laser and configured to modulate a fixed wavelength optical carrier with a first input signal of a set of input signals. The apparatus also includes a tunable laser. A second optical modulator is optically coupled to the tunable laser and configured to modulate a tunable optical carrier with a second input signal of the set of input signals. The apparatus also includes a dispersive element coupled to the second optical modulator, a first optical detector coupled to the dispersive element, a third optical modulator optically coupled to the first optical detector and the first optical modulator, an optical 90-degree hybrid element optically coupled to the third optical modulator, and a plurality of optical detectors optically coupled to the optical 90-degree hybrid element.

Abstract: An apparatus includes a photonic integrated circuit having an optical phased array, where the optical phased array includes multiple unit cells. Each unit cell includes multiple antenna elements configured to transmit or receive optical signals, where a first subset of the antenna elements is oriented in a first direction and a second subset of the antenna elements is oriented in a second direction opposite the first direction. Each unit cell also includes multiple signal pathways configured to transport the optical signals to or from the antenna elements, where at least some of the signal pathways have an “H” configuration. Each unit cell further includes multiple phase modulators configured to modify phases of the optical signals being transported through the signal pathways.

Abstract: Apparatus and associated methods relate to automatically loading a plurality of hazardous entities into a hazardous-entity container. Such automatic loading is performed by: i) lifting a selected hazardous entity of a plurality of hazardous entities from a stowed position to an elevation of a corresponding hazardous-entity portal of the hazardous-entity container; ii) sensing relative alignment the selected hazardous entity with respect to the corresponding hazardous-entity portal iii) aligning the selected hazardous entity with the corresponding hazardous-entity portal based on the relative alignment sensed by the alignment sensor; iv) evaluating whether an insertion condition is met based at least in part on the relative alignment sensed by the alignment sensor; and v) inserting the selected hazardous entity into its corresponding hazardous-entity portal if the insertion condition is met.

Abstract: An optical window for a hypersonic vehicle includes a window substrate and an optical coating on the window substrate, with the coating including multiple alternating layers of different materials. The coating may have many layers, for example having five or more alternating bi-layers and may be configured to still perform its optical function with some of the layers removed, such as by ablation of some of the layers through exposure to hypersonic flow. The different materials of the different layers may have different properties, for example with one of the materials being more resistant to ablation and/or chemical reaction than another of the layers. Coatings for anti-reflection additionally include a region of graded optical index between the sequence of bi-layers and the substrate. The hypersonic vehicle may include an optical sensor which operates by receiving light through the optical window.

Abstract: Systems and methods for detecting degraded navigation sensors are based on a policy derived from a Partially Observable Markoff Decision Process (POMDP). Navigation parameters derived from the navigation sensors are provided to individual Kalman filters. A covariance of each of the filters is indicative of a probability of degradation of a sensor from which the navigation parameter is derived. Outputs of the Kalman filters are provided to a master filter. The master filter is compared to a criterion to determine whether there are indicia of a degraded sensor. If such an indicia are present, the Policy is consulted to determine which of the sensors are degraded. Consideration of degraded sensors when navigating a vehicle is inhibited.

Abstract: A stiff key provides rigid coupling between a pair of shafts, such as a motor shaft and a rotary position sensor. The key may have a main body and a protrusion from the main body, such as from a middle portion of the main body. One of the protrusion or the main body may engage one part of one of the shafts being coupled together, and the other of the protrusion or the main body may engage a part of the other of the shafts. For example the protrusion may be in a keyway of one shaft and the main body may engage a recess or flat of the other shaft. The key and the coupling may be used in applications where space is at a premium, for example in a missile.

Abstract: A method of thrust vectoring a missile utilizing jet tabs is presented. Jet tabs are used to create lateral control moments on a missile by rotating tabs into the rocket exhaust plume and changing the thrust deflection angle. The method includes simultaneously rolling the missile during the thrust vector maneuver in order to reduce the maximum tab exposure to the rocket plume. The method enables aggressive pitchover maneuvers while reducing the risk of tab failure due to excessive exposure.
