Abstract: An electric propulsion system includes a rotary electric machine having an output member, a rechargeable energy storage system (“RESS”) connected to the electric machine, a user interface device, and a controller. The RESS includes multiple battery modules and a switching circuit, the latter being configured, in response to electronic switching control signals, to connect the battery modules in a parallel-connected (“P-connected”) configuration or a series-connected (“S-connected”) configuration, as a selected battery configuration. The user interface device receives an operator-requested drive mode signal indicative of a desired drive mode of the electric propulsion system. The controller, which is programmed with mode-specific electrical losses associated with the desired drive mode, establishes the selected battery configuration in response to the drive mode signal, and presents a drive mode recommendation via the user interface device when the losses associated with the desired drive mode exceed a calibrated loss threshold.

Abstract: A solid-state switch assembly includes a base plate and an electrically insulating layer affixed to the base plate. First, second, third, and fourth power traces are affixed to the electrically insulating layer. First semiconductor devices are arranged on the first power trace to control power flow between the first power trace and the second power trace, second semiconductor devices are arranged on the second power trace to control power flow between the second power trace and the third power trace, and third semiconductor devices are arranged on the third power trace to control power flow between the third and fourth power traces. A first signal conductor communicates with the first semiconductor devices. A second signal conductor communicates with the second semiconductor devices. A third signal conductor communicates with the third semiconductor devices.

Abstract: A system for use with a direct current fast-charging (DCFC) station includes a controller and battery system. The battery system includes first and second battery packs, and first, second, and third switches. The switches have ON/OFF conductive states commanded by the controller to connect the battery packs in a parallel-connected (P-connected) or series-connected (S-connected) configuration. An electric powertrain with one or more electric machines is powered via the battery system. First and second charge ports of the system are connectable to the station via a corresponding charging cable. The first charge port receives a low or high charging voltage from the station. The second charge port receives a low charging voltage. When the station can supply the high charging voltage to the first charge port, the controller establishes the S-connected configuration via the switches, and thereafter charges the battery system solely via the first charge port.

Abstract: A disconnect device includes a mounting plate having a thermally conductive substrate applied onto the mounting plate. A first layer of an electrically conductive material is applied onto the substrate. A semiconductor switch supported on the first layer connects or disconnects an input power source to or from a load. A second layer of an electrically conductive material applied onto the substrate is electrically isolated from the first layer. An electronic sensing, control and protection circuit is supported on the second layer and is connected to the semiconductor switch to control operation of the semiconductor switch. A control unit in communication with the electronic sensing, control and protection circuit via an electrically isolated control path provides control and communication between the electronic sensing, control and protection circuit and the semiconductor switch.

Abstract: An integrated smart relay assembly includes a case and an electronic solid-state switch disposed inside the case and a gate driver circuit electrically connected to the electronic solid-state switch. The gate driver circuit is configured to drive the electronic solid-state switch with a predetermined gate voltage and a predetermined gate current. The relay assembly further includes a protection circuit electrically connected to the gate driver circuit. The protection circuit is configured to protect the electronic solid-state switch against over-voltage, short circuit, and overheating. The relay assembly further includes a communication interface integrated with the electronic solid-state switch. Each of the protection circuit, electronic solid-state switch, and the communication interface is disposed inside the case.

Abstract: An electric drive system includes a battery pack, a power inverter module (“PIM”), an electric machine, a switching circuit, and a controller. The electric machine has three or more phase legs. The PIM has a DC-side connected to the battery pack, and an alternating current (“AC”)-side connected to the electric machine. The switching circuit includes AC switches, and for each phase leg also includes three or more winding sections each electrically connectable to or disconnectable from the battery pack and PIM via the AC switches. The controller commands a binary switching state of each respective AC switch based on the rotary speed to implement one of three different speed-based operating modes of the electric machine, and to thereby vary a conductive path from the PIM to the electric machine through one or more of the connected winding sections.
