    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for making esters, in particular biodiesel, using heterogeneous catalysts. The invention provides a process for making biodiesel, in particular FAME, which process is versatile and robust. The process of the invention can be carried out continuously, in particular in a fixed bed reactor or a slurry reactor and may be operated in a continuous fashion. In accordance with the invention, the transesterification reaction of triglycerides is carried out using a heterogeneous catalyst that comprises a Group 4 silicate and less than 3 wt. % Na in the presence of at least one acid compound.

    Abstract: The present invention describes bacterial strains CECT 7968, CECT 7969 and NCIMB 42026 of the species B. subtilis, capable of expressing the heterologous synthetic mutated genes: pdc and adhB, originating from Z. mobilis, 'tesA, originating from E. coli, and atfl, originating from Acinetobacter sp. ADP1. Furthermore, said strains may overexpress at least one of the genes of the ACC (acetyl-CoA carboxylase) and acyl-CoA synthetase enzymatic complexes. The use of said strains produces an increase in the production of biofuel, preferably biodiesel from glycerin as the carbon source. Moreover, the present invention describes the use of said bacterial strains for the production of said biofuel, biodiesel, from glycerin, as well as a process for synthesising biofuel, preferably biodiesel, using the strains described in the present invention and the biofuel duly obtained.

    Abstract: A reactor and process for the production of bio-diesel. The reactor includes one or more coiled reaction lines. The lines are positioned within a tank containing a heat transfer media such as molten salt, maintained at about 750° F. A pump circulates the media within the tank. An emulsion of alcohol; refined feed stock, including glycerides and/or fatty acids; and preferably water is pumped through the reaction lines at temperatures and pressures sufficient to maintain the alcohol in a super-critical state. The curvature of the coils, pump pulsing, and the flow rate of the emulsion keep the emulsion in a turbulent state while in the reactor, ensuring thorough mixing of the alcohol and feed stock. The alcohol reacts with the glycerides and fatty acids to form bio-diesel. The reaction is fast, efficient with regard to energy input and waste generation, and requires minimal alcohol.
