The present invention provides a display control apparatus comprising a read out unit configured to read out an image from a recording medium, a classification unit configured to classify a plurality of images into a plurality of groups in accordance with attribute information of each image, a display control unit configured to control to display a representative image which represents each of the plurality of groups, a comparison unit configured to compare an image included in one of the plurality of groups classified by the classification unit with an image included in another group, and a determination unit configured to determine one of images included in the one group as a representative image of the one group based on comparison by the comparison unit, the image not overlapping a representative image of the other group.

An original image file and a shortcut image file corresponding to original image data representing the original image file are provided for file management. An address tag representing a location in which the original image file is stored and an additional information tag such as information on printing of the original image file or information on layout are stored in a particular data region in the shortcut image file. In a case where the additional information represents information on image processing to be performed before printing, when an instruction of printing of the shortcut image file is issued, the image processing is performed on image data of the original image file and a resultant image data is printed. Basic data of a thumbnail image included in the shortcut image file is obtained by performing processing represented by the additional information tag on the thumbnail image data.

Groups of photo thumbnails are presented to the user, and where a user selects one of the thumbnails, a transition is provided replacing the group of thumbnails with the photo represented by the selected thumbnail. The photo may be displayed without cropping or stretching. In addition, a zoom/enlargement animation of the selected thumbnail is provided, and also possibly of the remaining thumbnails in the group, which then transitions into the represented photo. In addition, after or during the zooming animation, a cross-fading may occur such that the thumbnails fade out and the represented photo fades in. These types of transitions and user inputs both while the user is manually browsing thumbnails and when the user is viewing an automated slideshow of the thumbnails.

A CCD including primary photosensitive pixels that have a narrower dynamic range and secondary photosensitive pixels that have a wider dynamic range is used to obtain first image information from the primary photosensitive pixels and second image information from the secondary photosensitive pixels at one exposure, then the first image information and the second image information are stored as two separate files having names associated with each other. A user can select through a predetermined user interface whether or not the second image information should be stored and a dynamic range for the second image information. The dynamic range information for the second image information is stored in the file of the first image information and/or the header of the file of the second image information.
