Abstract:
Mixed phosphorous or arsenic salts of tetravalent metals are provided having the general formula M(HAO.sub.4).sub.2-x (HAO.sub.3).sub.x.nH.sub.2 O, where M is Zr, Ti or Hf, A is phosphorus or arsenic, x is between 0.05 and 1.95, and n is 0 to 6. The salts are highly stable and have wide potential application in the fields of ion exchange, catalysis, intercalation of molecules, solid electrolytes, and chromatography. The salts are prepared by reacting a halide, oxyhalide, nitrate, sulphate, phosphate or oxide of the tetravalent metal, preferably in an aqueous medium, with at least two oxygenated acids of phosphorus and/or arsenic.
Abstract:
The invention relates to the use of hydrogen ion-exchanged layered clays in organic reactions which are catalyzed by protons. Such organic reactions include the production of ethers by the reaction of an alcohol with an olefin or an olefin oxide, the production of an ether by the reaction of a primary or secondary aliphatic alcohol or an olefin oxide, the production of an alkyl aromatic compound by the reaction of an aromatic hydrocarbon with an olefin or a C.sub.2 or higher alcohol and the production of an alcohol by the hydration of an olefin.

Abstract:
This invention relates to the immobilization of toxic, e.g., radioactive, materials in a silicate glass or silica gel matrix for extremely long periods of time. Toxic materials, such as radioactive wastes containing radioactive cations, which may be in the form of liquids, or solids dissolved or dispersed in liquids or gases, are incorporated into a glass or silica gel matrix, having alkali metal, Group Ib metal and/or ammonium cations bonded to silicon atoms of said glass or silica gel through divalent oxygen linkages, by a process which involves the ion exchange of said toxic or radioactive cations with said alkali metal, Group Ib metal and/or ammonium cations to bind said toxic or radioactive cations to silicon atoms of said glass or silica gel through said silicon-bonded divalent oxygen linkages. Thereafter, the resulting glass or silica gel now characterized by toxic or radioactive cations bonded to silicon atoms through divalent oxygen linkages can be stored, or packaged in suitable containers, or disposed of as by burial, and/or sintered to collapse the pores thereof.
Abstract:
