Abstract: A refrigerator cabinet has a door closing device integral with a door top hinge member to fit within the door. The mechanism includes a bearing member secured to the door and a cam member nonrotatably secured to the hinged pin below the bearing member and having a cam follower engaging a cam surface on the lower face of the bearing member. A spring is secured around the lower end of the hinge pin to force the cam member upward against the bearing member and its cam surface, with the cam surface and a cam follower on the cam member being configured to provide a closing bias when the door is near the closed position and detent positions when the door is opened a predetermined amount.

Abstract: An automobile trunk lid is mounted for swinging on the automobile body between closed and open positions with respect to the trunk compartment. Each hinge includes a slotted hinge arm attached to the underside of the lid and a slotted body bracket attached to the body adjacent one side of the trunk compartment. A follower on the hinge arm projects into and is adapted to travel along the slot in the body bracket while a follower on the body bracket projects into the slot in the hinge arm. As the lid is opened, the followers and slots coact to first elevate the forward portion of the lid away from the body and then to allow the lid to swing open about an instantaneously changing axis. A spring, a cam and a cable coact to apply a spring-assist to the lid during opening, the cam and cable acting to compensate for the spring rate of the spring as the lid moves and its center of gravity changes in space.

Abstract: A wheel retainer prevents a wheel of a sliding or bypass door from jumping off of the floor track on which the wheel rolls. Portions are provided on the lower portion of the retainer for slidably engaging a downwardly facing portion of the track for inhibiting upward movement of the retainer from the track. Preferably this in the form of an L-shaped hook having a base wider than the opening of a dovetail slot in the track and a neck narrower than the opening of the slot. The retainer can then be installed only by pivoting the retainer relative to the track for inserting the hook. The retainer also has portions for engaging an upper portion of the wheel to prevent it from being lifted from the track. The preferred embodiment is a D-shape with an arcuate portion over the top of the wheel and barbs that prevent the retainer from accidentally being dislodged from the wheel.

Abstract: A door check wherein a housing is affixed to the pivotable panel and a guide rail is affixed to the frame of a door. The housing contains a shaft which is rigidly connected with one end of an arm the other end of which is slidably guided by the rail. The shaft carries a disc cam having two asymmetric sections one of which is tracked by a spring-biased follower tending to return the panel to its closed position and the other of which is tracked by the piston of a damper which yieldably opposes the movement of the panel back to its closed position. The configuration of the two cam sections is selected with a view to allow for a reduction of the resistance which the follower offers to opening of the door shortly after the panel leaves its closed position as well as to ensure that the damper can operate independently of the follower and vice versa.

Abstract: A door and a substantially concealed hinge are provided, particularly for cabinets. The hinge is designed to be substantially hidden in a wedge-shaped recess in a hinge edge of the door. The recess can be made by a single pass of a cutting tool relative to the door or vice versa. The hinge includes a first hinge wing and a second hinge wing connected by a knuckle. The first hinge wing has a first portion extending outwardly from the knuckle in a generally radial direction and a second portion structurally integral with the first portion, extending at an angle relative to the first portion, and having openings for mounting the first hinge wing on the door frame. The second hinge wing has a third portion extending generally radially-outwardly from the knuckle at a narrow, included angle relative to the plane of the door and to the second hinge portion when the hinge is in a closed position. The second wing has a fourth portion structurally integral with the third, angular portion and extending outwardly in a plane parallel to the door and to the second portion of the first wing when the hinge is in the closed position. The fourth portion of the second wing also has openings for attaching the second wing to the inner surface of the door. The first portion of the first wing, the third portion of the second wing, and all or substantially all of the knuckle lie within the wedge-shaped recess for all positions of the door.
