    Abstract: A modular optical sensor system for fluid media has a measuring module which includes an exchangeable fluid chamber and an exchangeable optic holder. The fluid chamber has an inlet and an outlet as well as a measurement space for the fluid medium. The optic holder has at least one optical transmitter and at least one optical receiver. The optic holder is inserted within the measuring module relative to the fluid chamber in such a way that the radiation emitted by the optical transmitter traverses the measurement space for the fluid medium in the fluid chamber and impinges on the optical receiver.

    Abstract: A photometer is provided with modular lighting units wherein each lighting unit includes one or more light emitters. A user may select a desired lighting unit and install it within a photometer base unit, and thereafter activate one or more of the emitters (which may emit light of different wavelengths) to illuminate a specimen. The light provided by the specimen in response can then be captured at a detector, and analyzed to provide an indication of the specimen's characteristics. Different lighting units may optionally include one or more input light adapters (filters or polarizers which modify the light provided by the emitter(s) to the specimen), and/or one or more output light adapters (filters or polarizers which modify the light provided by the specimen to the detector). Users may therefore select lighting units with emitters and light adapters which are particularly suited for detection/analysis of particular specimens and/or components therein.

    Abstract: A portable system and method for measuring the concentration of multiple chemical or biological substances where an onsite analysis of such substances is needed. The new and original handheld sensor system uses a disposable optical test element and a spectroscopic detector that measures the test element response to specific analytes through a change in light absorbance, luminescence, and other forms of light-based response. In this way, reflection light intensities indicative of the test element response can be used to measure the concentration of the target analytes. The sensor system is also capable of being interfaced to an information processing unit or computer so that analytical data can be manipulated or stored electronically.
