    Abstract: A method of analyzing a sample is disclosed. The method includes the steps of measuring a spectral response of the sample, selecting a reference material having a Raman peak with a magnitude at a wave number, measuring a peak value in the spectral response at the wave number, and determining an amount of the reference material in the sample based in part on a ratio of the measured peak value to the magnitude of the Raman peak of the reference material.

    Abstract: A LIBS analysis system comprises a focusing lens arrangement having a focal plane; a laser for propagating a laser beam through the focusing lens arrangement to be focused at the focal plane; a detector for generating an output that is proportional to an intensity of incident electromagnetic radiation that is incident on the detector; a translation mechanism configured to cause a relative movement of the sample holder and the focusing lens arrangement to vary a position of the focal plane along the optical path with respect to the sample holder; and a controller configured to automatically control the translation mechanism to cause the relative movement of the sample holder and the focusing lens arrangement to achieve an optimum position at which the focal plane and an analysis region of the upper surface intersecting the optical path are at or are close to coincidence.

    Abstract: A deployable measurement system for analyzing a rail of a railroad track includes a housing, a reflecting assembly coupled to the housing, a movement assembly coupled to the housing, and an optical measurement system disposed within the housing. Both the housing and the reflecting assembly are moveable between a stored position and a deployed position. The movement assembly includes a deployment assembly that moves the reflecting assembly from the stored position to the deployed position, and a retraction assembly that moves the reflecting assembly from the deployed position to the stored position. The optical measurement system emits and receives light. The reflecting assembly reflects the emitted light toward the rail. The reflecting assembly reflects light reflected off of the rail toward the optical measurement system. The light received by the optical measurement system is used to measure parameters related to the rail.

    Abstract: A white light confocal optical measurement device capable of detecting abnormalities in a received light waveform; the optical measurement device includes: a light source; an optical system; a light receiving unit; and a processor configured to compute the distance from the optical system to the measurement object on the basis of a received light intensity of the wavelength components received in the light receiving unit. The processor compares a received light intensity of a wavelength component to a reference value for the wavelength component for a plurality of wavelength components in a waveform representing the light received, and detects an abnormality in the received light waveform when the amount of change in the received light intensity compared to the reference value therefor is greater than or equal to a predetermined threshold for any wavelength component in the plurality of wavelength components.

    Abstract: A gas sensing system measures a concentration of a gas sample having an absorption peak at a first wavelength. An emitter emits light having a spectrum that includes at least the first wavelength. A sensor detects at least some of the light emitted by the emitter. A porous scattering material is substantially transparent at the first wavelength and scatters at least some of the light. A surface of the porous scattering material opposing the emitter and the sensor has a depression. The emitter and the sensor are laterally and vertically separated by a separator filling the depression. The separator specularly or diffusively reflects the light emitted by the emitter.
