Abstract: An active-source-pixel, integrated device capable of performing biomolecule detection and/or analysis, such as single-molecule nucleic acid sequencing, is described. An active pixel of the integrated device includes a sample well into which a sample to be analyzed may diffuse, an excitation source for providing excitation energy to the sample well, and a sensor configured to detect emission from the sample. The sensor may comprise two or more segments that produce a set of signals that are analyzed to differentiate between and identify tags that are attached to, or associated with, the sample. Tag differentiation may be spectral and/or temporal based. Identification of the tags may be used to detect, analyze, and/or sequence the biomolecule.

Abstract: A metrology system includes a radiation source (708), a phased array (722a,b;724a,b;726;734), a detector, and a comparator. The phased array includes optical elements (706), waveguides (704), and phase modulators (702). The phased array generates a beam of radiation and directs the beam toward a surface of an object. The optical elements radiate radiation waves. The waveguides guide radiation from the radiation source to the optical elements. The phase modulators adjust phases of the radiation waves such that the radiation waves combine to form the beam. The detector receives radiation scattered from the surface and generates a detection signal based on the received radiation. The comparator analyzes the detection signal and determines a location of a defect on the surface based on the analyzing.

Abstract: In some implementations, a method comprises: determining a set of characteristics of light spectra reflected or transmitted by a set of materials when the set of materials is illuminated by a plurality of light wavelengths; constructing one or more classifiers configured to classify each material of the set of materials based on the set of characteristics of the light spectra; using the classifiers, mapping each of the light spectra onto an area of an image sensor; wherein one or more optical elements filter and focus the light spectra onto one or more elements of a detector array; wherein each optical element focuses onto an area of the detector array; wherein the mapping is a 1:1 mapping; wherein each optical element uses a Bragg reflection condition to filter the light spectra and to focus the light spectra onto an element of the detector array.

Abstract: A deployable measurement system for analyzing a rail of a railroad track includes a housing, a reflecting assembly coupled to the housing, a movement assembly coupled to the housing, and an optical measurement system disposed within the housing. Both the housing and the reflecting assembly are moveable between a stored position and a deployed position. The movement assembly includes a deployment assembly that moves the reflecting assembly from the stored position to the deployed position, and a retraction assembly that moves the reflecting assembly from the deployed position to the stored position. The optical measurement system emits and receives light. The reflecting assembly reflects the emitted light toward the rail. The reflecting assembly reflects light reflected off of the rail toward the optical measurement system. The light received by the optical measurement system is used to measure parameters related to the rail.

Abstract: A gas sensing system measures a concentration of a gas sample having an absorption peak at a first wavelength. An emitter emits light having a spectrum that includes at least the first wavelength. A sensor detects at least some of the light emitted by the emitter. A porous scattering material is substantially transparent at the first wavelength and scatters at least some of the light. A surface of the porous scattering material opposing the emitter and the sensor has a depression. The emitter and the sensor are laterally and vertically separated by a separator filling the depression. The separator specularly or diffusively reflects the light emitted by the emitter.
