Abstract:
Oxidized polyisobutenes, that is polyisobutenes containing ketonic and carboxylic acid carbonyl groups, are produced by passing through a column of the polyisobutene maintained at a temperature in the range from 140.degree. to 200.degree. C. and at atmospheric or elevated total pressure a molecular oxygen-containing gaseous oxidant at a gas flow rate greater than 10 liters cm.sup.-2 h.sup.-1 measured at the operating pressure. The oxidized polyisobutenes can be reacted for example with an aliphatic polyamine to produce a lubricating oil additive or with an aliphatic polyamine and formaldehyde to produce a fuels additive.

Abstract:
This invention is to lubricating or fuel oil compositions containing amine compatibility aids. The amine compatibility additives are especially useful in stabilizing (or "compatibilizing") concentrates, lubricating oil or fuel oil compositions which contain copper antioxidants, high molecular weight dispersants, high total base number detergents, and various antiwear friction modifier materials. These materials may, in some circumstances, replace at least a portion of previously used compatibility aids and antioxidants.
Abstract:
As a flow improver in a crude oil or a liquid hydrocarbon fuel are used polymers containing more than one amide group, the amide being an amide of a secondary amine, and either the amide group or an ester group of the polymer containing a hydrogen- and carbon-containing group of at least 10 carbon atoms, provided that if the polymer is derived from the polymerization of an aliphatic olefin and maleic anhydride, the polymer must have both an amide group and an ester group each of which contains a hydrogen- and carbon-containing group of at least 10 carbon atoms, for example, a diamide of a copolymer of an alkyl fumarate, vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride.
Abstract:
Compositions useful as pour point depressants, novel compounds within such compositions, and processes for making same, as well as lubricant oil compositions containing same, are disclosed. The novel compounds are encompassed by the general structural formula (I) ##STR1## wherein the Ar, Ar' and Ar" are independently an aromatic moiety containing 1 to 3 aromatic rings and each aromatic moiety is substituted with 0 to 3 substituents, (R) and (R') are independently an alkylene group containing about 1 to 100 carbon atoms with the proviso that at least one of (R) or (R') is CH.sub.2, and n is 0 to about 1000; with the proviso that if n is 0, then (R) is CH.sub.2 and each aromatic moiety is independently substituted with 0 to 3 substituents with one aromatic moiety having at least one substituent, the substituents being selected from the group consisting of a substituent derived from an olefin and a substituent derived from a chlorinated hydrocarbon. The composition of the invention includes compounds varying in molecular weight from about 271 to about 300,000.
Abstract:
Carboxylic acid derived from fatty acid or aralkyl acid is reacted with multiamine, to form a mixture containing amides, imides, and half esters with subsequent reaction with epoxide, particularly an alkylene oxide to produce a product mix that has good detergent properties in fuels.
Abstract:
An ester of a carboxy-containing interpolymer is disclosed, said interpolymer having an RSV of from about 0.05 to about 2. The esterified polymer will include at least an ester group (A) which is a carboxylic ester group having at least about 8 aliphatic carbon atoms in the ester group with the proviso that if the ester group (A) contains less than 28 carbon atoms, the interpolymer ester will include an ester group which is a carboxylic ester group having an ester group of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is a hydrocarbyl group of about 1 to about 50 carbon atoms, R' is a hydrocarbyl group of about 1 to about 50 carbon atoms, y is a number in the range of zero to about 50 and z is a number in the range of zero to about 50 with the proviso that both y and z cannot be zero. The interpolymer may include an ester group (C) which is a carboxylic ester group having no more than 7 aliphatic carbon atoms in the ester group. Crude oil, lubricating oil and fuel compositions and additive concentrates containing such ester are disclosed.
Abstract:
The cold flow of fuel oils is improved by adding esters of addition products of epoxides of specifically limited nitrogen-containing compounds with linear saturated fatty acids or a combination of the esters and polymers of one or more monomers selected from the group consisting of olefins, alkyl esters of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and vinyl esters of saturated fatty acids to fuel oils.
Abstract:
A process is described for the production of copolymers derived predominantly from a monomer, e.g. tert-butylstyrene, having a very low solubility in water, by low temperature emulsion polymerization in a medium consisting substantially of water alone, under specified reaction conditions; high levels of conversion of monomer are achieved. The copolymer products are useful as additives to liquid hydrocarbon fuels for the purpose of reducing the tendency of the fuels to disseminate into mists under conditions of shock.
Abstract:
Copolymers are described of at least 75% by weight of tert-butyl styrene, from 1% to 24% by weight of a copolymerizable second monomer and from 1% to 10% by weight of methacrylic acid, the copolymers having certain specified solubility and rheological characteristics in AVTUR 50 aviation kerosene. A process for making the copolymers by aqueous emulsion polymerization of the monomers under certain defined conditions is also described. The copolymers are useful as additives to liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels for the purpose of reducing the tendency of such fuels to form inflammable mists under shock conditions.
