A flame-retardant polymer composition includes: (a) a crystalline propylene homopolymer or copolymer; (b) a copolymer of ethylene with at least one alpha-olefin having from 4 to 12 carbon atoms, and optionally with a diene; and (c) a flame-retardant inorganic filler. Copolymer (b) has a density of between 0.90 and 0.86 g/cm3 and a Composition Distribution Index, defined as the weight percentage of copolymer molecules having an alpha-olefin content within 50% of the average total molar content of alpha-olefin, of greater than 45%.

The invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of precipitated silica which can be used as a reinforcing filler for elastomers. The invention also relates to novel precipitated silicas in the form of powder, granules or, preferably, substantially spherical beads, these silicas being characterized in that they have a BET specific surface of between 185 and 250 m2/g,a CTAB specific surface of between 180 and 240 m2/g,and a pore distribution such that the pore volume V2 made up of the pores with a diameter of between 175 and 275 null represents less than 50% of the pore volume V1 made up of the pores with diameters of less than or equal to 400 null, a pore volume (Vd1), made up of the pores with a diameter of less than 1 nullm, of greater than 1.65 cm3/g, a fineness value (F.V.) of between 70 and 100 null, and a content of fines (nullf), after deagglomerability with ultrasound, of at least 50%.

A flame retardant resin composition comprising (A) 100 parts by weight of a synthetic resin, (B) 20 to 150 parts by weight of magnesium hydroxide particles and (C) 20 to 150 parts by weight of aluminum hydroxide particles, wherein the magnesium hydroxide particles and the aluminum hydroxide particles satisfy the following conditions (i) to (v): (i) the average secondary particle diameter measured by a microtrack method is 0.4 to 4 .mu.m; (ii) the specific surface measured by a BET method is 1 to 15 m.sup.2 /g; (iii) the total content of an iron compound and a manganese compound is 200 ppm or less in terms of metals (Fe+Mn); (iv) the ratio of the specific surface measured by the BET method to the specific surface measured by a Blaine method is 1 to 4; and (v) the content of a water-soluble sodium salt is 500 ppm or less in terms of metal sodium. The present invention provide a halogen-free flame retardant resin composition which has excellent thermal stability, acid resistance, water-resistant insulating properties, mechanical strength and surface appearance and is economically advantageous, and a molded article therefrom.

The invention provides rubber compositions comprising: a diene rubber component; and a filler system, wherein the filler system comprises: a first silica which is surface-functionalised by the introduction of one of more functional groups and has a BET specific surface area of from 250 to 310 m2/g and a CTAB specific surface area of from 230 to 285 m2/g; and a second silica which is not surface-functionalised and has a BET specific surface area of from 60 to 120 m2/g and a CTAB specific surface area of from 55 to 105 m2/g. The rubber compositions are particularly suitable for use in the production of tire components, in particular tire treads.
