Abstract: A foam for use in a lost-foam casting process utilized in the manufacture of a component for a gas turbine engine, the foam having a void fraction less than or equal to ninety five percent, is disclosed. The foam may include a first layer comprising polymer foam having an open-cell structure and a void fraction greater than ninety five percent. A second layer, comprising adhesive, may be adhered to the first layer. A third layer comprising particulate material may be adhered to the second layer.

Abstract: The invention provides a method for dispersing particles within a reaction field, the method comprising confining the particles to the reaction field using a standing wave. Abstract: A shower head that includes a stem, a spray head coupled to the stem and including a plurality of outlets for discharging water into at least one spray pattern, and a valve provided within one of the stem and the spray head. The valve has a body including a waterway located therein for water to flow through, and a flow control valve located within the body and configured to control the flow of water to the plurality of outlets. The shower head also includes an electric heater extending through at least a portion of the body of the valve and configured to heat at least a portion of the body to an elevated temperature sufficient to kill organisms within the waterway.

Abstract: A new method for durably bonding layers of a functional material to surfaces physically and chemically bonds solid layer lubricants and other functional coatings to a substrate surface by first applying a bond layer of a selected substantially binder-free soft material onto the substrate surface by, for example, burnishing, and then applying the functional layer onto the bond layer. Example soft materials for the bond layer include soft oxides such as antimony trioxide and example solid layer lubricants include graphite, molybdenum disulfide and mixtures of such lubricants. The new method is a major improvement over conventional bonding or coating methods. The process is non-vacuum at ambient temperatures and requires no binders, adhesives, curing or baking. Lubricant performance is enhanced by orders of magnitude compared to conventional approaches. The method is inexpensive, environmentally friendly, applicable to almost any substrate material and scalable.
