Abstract: A lubricant composition comprising (a), a water-based lubricant which comprises a substantially oil-free, aqueous, emulsion-free composition of a matter comprising a major amount of water, a minor but effective amount of at least one substantially water-insoluble oil-soluble functional additive stably dispersed therein, and a minor but effective amount of at least one substantially water-soluble, liquid organic dispersing agent which is capable of dissolving the functional additive and of stably dispersing the functional additive in the composition, (b), a particulate solid lubricant suspended in the water-based lubricant and uniformly dispersed therethrough, and (c), a thixotropic thickener which maintains the solid lubricant in suspension in the water-based lubricant.

Abstract: A composition which comprises (a) a salt of monovalent metal (M) of a carboxylic acid in which the COOH group is attached to a ring atom of a fused ring system and (b) a grease which is a non-soap thickened oil which may be a mineral oil or a synthetic oil such as a silicone oil. The metal (M) may be sodium. The fused ring system is preferably a fused aromatic hydrocarbon ring system such as naphthalene and may include further substituents, for example an -OH group, in addition to the COOH group. If the acid contains both OH and COOH groups, these can be attached to adjacent atoms of the fused ring system. Sodium 2-naphthoate and sodium 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoate have been found to be particularly suitable. The grease has improved corrosion resistance and the addition of the metal compound does not result in destructing of the grease.

Abstract: Additives comprising an adduct of a calcium salt of a thiocarbonic acid and calcium hydroxide are useful in lubricants to enhance both the extreme pressure/anti-wear and anti-oxidation capabilities thereof. The lubricants are preferably oils of lubricating viscosity, which may be thickened to a grease-like consistency with one or more oil thickeners and contain from about 0.1 to about 20 weight percent of said adduct.

Abstract: A solid lubricating material consisting essentially of an intimate mixture of about 15 to 50 mole percent molybdenum trioxide, balance molybdenum disulfide. This material is particularly useful under extreme environmental conditions such as very high temperature or vacuum. The material may be used in powder form, compacted into a pellet or other desired shape, incorporated into a grease composition or incorporated into a resin-bonded solid film lubricant.

Abstract: A water-based lubricating grease composition includes at least 40 wt % water; a salt-based thickener; a polymer-based thickener; and optionally, an inorganic solid-based thickener. A process for preparing the water-based lubricating grease composition may include blending a suitable amount of water with a salt-based thickener to provide a thickened water-based grease, wherein the salt-based thickener is obtained from contacting a base with a fat; and adding a polymer-based thickener to the thickened water-based grease.

Abstract: A novel and environmentally friendly lignin based lubricant composition in the form of oil, gel, grease, paste, solid, or water/glycol emulsion comprising lignin and/or its derivatives with a dosage ranging from 0.01 to 95 wt %, preferably 0.1% to 80 wt %, or even more preferably 0.5 to 60 wt % dispersed in at least one or more components selected from 1) base oils, 2) surfactants or coupling agents, 3) lubricant additives, or 4) grease thickeners of soap or non-soap type whereupon the said composition was found to exhibit novel and synergistic performance benefits such as, but not limited to, antioxidancy, extreme pressure, antiwear, lubricity as well as a rheology modifying characteristics, e.g. thickening effect, for a broad range of lubricant, grease, or oil field drilling applications.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to greases containing metal sulfonate thickeners. In one example the thickener may be a calcium sulfonate thickener. In other examples grease may contain a combination of a metal sulfonate thickener and another thickener, such as a metal complex soap grease, detergent, or non-soap thickener. The grease may be formulated to meet specific performance criteria relevant to lubrication of a roller cone drill bit in downhole conditions. The disclosure also relates to a roller cone drill bit containing a grease of the disclosure.

Abstract: A composition is disclosed which comprises an aryl perfluoropolyether, optionally a halogenated oil, and further optionally a thickening agent. The composition can be used as a lubricant itself or as an additive to an oil or grease lubricant and can withstand temperatures higher than 300° C. without decomposition. The halogenated oil can be a perfluoropolyether, a fluorosilicone, a polytrifluorochloroethylene, or combinations of two or more thereof. The thickening agent can be finely divided silica, boron nitride, clay, soap, poly(tetrafluoroethylene), clay, talc, silica, titanium dioxide, polydimethylsiloxane, polyurea, polyurethane, or combinations of two or more thereof.

Abstract: A method of forming a lubricating film on a surface, comprising applying to a surface a multiphasic composition comprising at least one (per)fluoropolyether (PFPE) lubricant, water and from 0.1 to 3% by weight of water of at least one thickening agent, said multiphasic composition having a viscosity, when measured at 21° C. at a shear rate of 1 sec−1 of at least 10 Pa×sec so as to form a layer, and drying said layer to form a lubricating film. The Applicant has found that by the use of the multiphasic composition as above detailed it is advantageously possible to convey to surface to be lubricated the PFPE lubricant by using application techniques (doctor blade, metering rod, . . . ) as those suitable for solid-like greases, while the actual conveyed lubricant behaves in lubrication as an oil, avoiding the use of fluorinated solvents.
