The spray mist is produced by ejecting the liquid from one or more nozzles (1) in the form of jets (2) disintegrating into drops and the liquid formed from the drops is then conveyed to a spray system (4) which is electrically insulated from the nozzles (1) and a powerful electric field is applied between the nozzles (1) and the spray system (4). A spherical impact electrode or a two-material spray nozzle insulated against earth under a high voltage may be used as spray system. The main advantage is that the smooth jet nozzle (1) and hence also the container for the liquid to be sprayed are at earth potential.

An electrostatic nozzle assembly for coating row crops and other plants with electrostatically charged particles of pesticide including a nozzle body formed with passageways to receive air and a grounded stream of waterborne pesticide for delivery through a nozzle tip to an inductor ring mounted between the nozzle body and an air nozzle having a discharge orifice. As the stream of waterborne pesticide is projected from the nozzle tip, it is impacted with a swirling, spirally moving stream of air produced by a swirl plate having a plurality of tapered air channels oriented tangentially relative to the pesticide stream and communicating with the air passageway in the nozzle body. The inductor ring inductively charges the pesticide in the terminal end of the nozzle tip. The swirling air stream atomizes the charged pesticide stream expelled from the nozzle tip into finely divided particles, and then imparts the swirling motion to the charged particles which fan radially outwardly in a wide spray pattern when ejected from the discharge orifice in the air nozzle. An electrical standoff is also provided by forming the air nozzle with an irregularly-shaped outer surface which lengthens the electrical path which charged particles collected on the air nozzle would have to travel to migrate to the grounded support for the nozzle body or the nearest grounded point.
Abstract:
Aerial spraying apparatus includes two sets of nozzles located at spaced locations on an aircraft. Each nozzle has an electrode associated with it to induce a charge on the cloud of droplets issuing from the nozzle. A high potential is maintained on each electrode by a power pack that induces an equal and opposite potential on the electrodes of each set. By virtue of the opposed polarity of the electrodes, the aircraft is maintained at a neutral potential. To prevent a potential being imposed due to spray being deposited on the electrodes, a pair of corona needles are provided to establish a leakage current and maintain the electrodes at the required potential. This prevents the system becoming imbalanced and a potential being established on the aircraft.

A strip nozzle assembly containing a detachable, pressure regulating inlet coupler and a plurality of pressure regulating outlet nozzles, whereby agricultural sprays may be strip applied. The assembly having particular application in a modular spraying system adaptable to either broadcast or strip spraying. Compatibility with system pressure and desired flow rates are achieved via flat plate, sharped edge orifices that in one embodiment are arranged in a series/parallel configuration.

Disclosed is a spray gun having a gas nozzle and a fluid nozzle, each of said nozzles being in cooperative spatial relationship with the other to cause a fluid stream issuing from the fluid nozzle to be atomized and sprayed as fluid particles by gas issuing from the gas nozzle. In a preferred embodiment the fluid nozzle orifice has therein an axially disposed rod to increase surface area from which said fluid particles can be formed, said rod being electrically grounded at least during fluid issue from the nozzle. The spray gun additionally has an induction charging electrode disposed adjacent the gas and fluid nozzles, said electrode defining a charging zone wherein an electrostatic charge is imparted to atomized electrically-chargeable fluid particles.

Spraying apparatus for spraying liquid pesticides on to crops growing in the ground includes a plurality of electrostatic spraying devices mounted on a boom which can be mounted on a powered vehicle such as a tractor or an aircraft. Each spraying device includes a spray-head having an at least electrically semi-conducting surface charged to a potential of the order of 1-20 kilovolts, a field intensifying electrode mounted adjacent the spray-head surface and being so sited relative to the spray-head surface that the electrostatic field thereat causes pesticide liquid delivered thereto to atomize without substantial corona discharge to form electrically charged particles.

A device to use as an agricultural sprayer, comprising a rotatable conductive sprayhead in the form of a disc or cup, means for supplying spray liquid from a reservoir to an inner surface of the sprayhead, an electric motor for rotating the sprayhead about its axis at a rate of 1000 to 8000 rpm, a circular induction electrode disposed adjacent the sprayhead rim, a high voltage generator for charging the electrode to a pontential in the range 1 to 3 Kilovolts, and means for earthing the sprayhead.

A light-weight, portable power pack for supplying a high voltage output to an electrostatic spray gun from a low voltage input is disclosed. The power pack is mounted on and forms a part of the spray gun and is detachable therefrom for replacement purposes. The power pack comprises a voltage multiplier circuit for converting a low voltage DC to a high voltage DC for induction charging of material discharged from the spray gun, the circuit being encapsulated in an epoxy resin material to provide a suitable mounting case therefor. The case is molded into a suitable shape and is attached, in one embodiment, to the bottom portion of the barrel of the gun by means of screws, bolts or the like, the power pack being provided with external contacts which serve to engage corresponding contacts on the spray gun to provide electical contact through the gun to the power source, which may be a battery pack carried by the operator, and to the inductive charging device for the spray gun. In another embodiment, the power pack may be mounted upon a detachable accessory such as a gas shroud forming chamber which is in turn mountable on the forward end portion of the spray gun barrel.

Apparatus for the conveyance and atomization of a liquid including at least one nozzle directed toward an atomizing chamber, a pressure source or reservoir providing a conveying pressure for the liquid, a fluid-dynamic connection connecting the nozzle and the pressure source or reservoir, and an electrode disposed a predetermined distance in front of the nozzle. At least a portion of the nozzle is formed of an electrically conductive material and is electrically insulated at least with respect to the electrode. A difference in potential is applied between the electrically conductive portion of the nozzle and the electrode during an atomizing period, whereby liquid discharged from the nozzle is atomized.
