    Abstract: A method includes storing a superset of data on a data storage medium along with a corresponding superset superparity. The superset of data includes multiple sets of data, and the corresponding superset superparity is calculated based on all of the multiple sets of data. The method also includes updating at least one subset of the superset of data. The subset has a subset superparity. The superset superparity is updated with the subset superparity, and the subset superparity and a location of the subset within the superset are employed to carry out error correction operations.

    Abstract: A magnetic recording medium includes a recording surface comprising a first recording layer having a first ferromagnetic resonant frequency and a second recording layer having a second ferromagnetic resonant frequency. The first recording layer is configured for storing user data and the second recording layer configured for storing servo data. A recording head arrangement is configured for microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) and writing user data to the first recording layer. The recording head arrangement comprises a write pole configured to generate a write magnetic field, and a write-assist arrangement proximate the write pole. The write-assist arrangement is configured to generate a radiofrequency assist magnetic field at a frequency that corresponds to the first ferromagnetic resonant frequency. A reader of the recording head arrangement is configured to read combined signals from the first and second recording layers.

    Abstract: A disc drive includes a data storage surface having a system data zone and a user data zone, and a head that communicates with the data storage surface. The disc drive also includes a control circuit communicatively coupled to the head. The control circuit is configured to, during power up initialization of the disc drive, apply a fly height control value to direct the head to fly at a first target fly height for reading system data from the system data zone. The first target fly height is substantially higher than a second target fly height for reading user data from the user data zone. The control circuit determines whether an actual fly height of the head is substantially equal to the first target fly height. The control circuit performs fly height correction when the actual fly height is not substantially equal to the first target fly height.

    Abstract: A disk drive including multiple magnetic recording disks and at least one read/write head, wherein the disk drive includes a rotatable center block having a vertical axis and a mounting member, a first motor attached to the center block for rotating the center block about the vertical axis, a vertical threaded rod positioned in the mounting member, a second motor moveable along the vertical threaded rod, at least one head suspension arm extending outwardly from the second motor, and at least one read/write head mounted to a distal end of one of the arms. The disk drive further includes multiple disks in a stack, wherein at least one of the arms is vertically moveable along the vertical threaded rod by the second motor to position the at least one read/write head in a position to access data on one of the disk surfaces of the plurality of disks.

    Abstract: The disclosed technology includes methods and systems that reduce off-track write retry operations in shingled magnetic recording systems. In one implementation, the method includes writing data to an initial track, determining which side of the initial track is a shingled side, calculating a percentage of position error signal (PES) at a shingled side end of the initial track (PES1) when an off-track write operation occurs, determining whether the PES1 meets a first pre-determined threshold, continue writing data to a second track responsive to determining the PES1 is below a first pre-determined threshold, calculating a percentage of PES at a shingled side end of the second track (PES2), determining whether a combined value of PES1 and PES2 is above a second predetermined threshold to determine a probability value of the initial track being erased, and continue writing to a third track if the combined value is below the second predetermined threshold.
