Abstract:
A sluice device for insertion between zones having different environmental conditions, for instance pressure and/or temperature. A drum is rotatably arranged in an opening in a housing and has radially displaceable flaps uniformly distributed along the periphery of the drum. Each flap has a first portion for sealing against the housing, and a second portion of the flap, adjacent to the drum, cooperates with a sealing device. The sluice device is formed as a longitudinal groove which is open against the drum, whereby a longitudinal sealing member is arranged in the groove. The pressure difference between spaces at the two sides of the flap brings the longitudinal sealing member in such a sealing position that the flap, by the pressure difference, is placed in sealing abutment against the inside of the housing regardless of the positive or negative pressure difference.
Abstract:
The particulate solid is maintained in a bed in contact with a liquid within a high pressure vessel. The particulate solid is supported in the vessel in a cone-like configuration. A discharge tube is provided communicating with the particulate solid running from the bottom of the cone externally of said vessel and pressure on the supported particulate is produced to discharge said particulate out of said vessel via the discharge tube.
Abstract:
Cellulosic material, such as wood chips, is fed from a storage bin (10) through a compacting screw feeder (12) to an impregnation chamber (16) in housing (14) wherein the material is contacted with a treatment liquid. The impregnated chips and treatment liquid are passed from chamber (16) by a triple flight intermeshing screw feeder (18) directly to the interior of an inclined treatment vessel (20) wherein the material is digested by cooking at elevated temperature and pressure in both the treatment liquid and a treatment vapor.
Abstract:
An elongated tubular wand is provided including an inlet end portion and an outlet end portion equipped with a spray discharge nozzle. A mounting sleeve is loosely disposed over the wand outlet end portion with the latter being slidingly reciprocal relative to the former. Seal structure is provided establishing a fluid tight sliding seal between the external surfaces of the wand and the internal surfaces of the mounting sleeve. A tubular full opening and closing valve is sealingly mounting on the end of the mounting sleeve corresponding to the wand outlet end portion and through which the latter may be lengthwise extended and retracted. The valve includes structure for support from a tubular inlet fitting opening into a closed pipe section or other closed vessel and the inlet end portion of the wand includes fluid inlet structure for sealed communication with a source of fluid under pressure.
Abstract:
Method and/or system for removing liquid slag from a pressurized gasifier. Hot liquid slag is quenched in a quenching medium such as water. The quenched and solidified slag is crushed to a maximum particle size. The crushed slag and quenching medium are alternatively connected to opposite ends of a floating piston while the other end is connected to an outlet for disposal of the slag. The crushed slag and quenching medium are subjected to the gasifier pressure so that the piston acts to forceably eject the mixture through the outlet.
Abstract:
A material-feeding apparatus having a casing provided with inlet and outlet openings. The casing encloses a rotor provided with circumferentially-arranged cylinders each fitted with a free piston. The cylinders progressively register with the inlet opening which is at or near atmospheric pressure and the outlet opening which is exposed to high pressure as the rotor is rotated intermittently by a drive mechanism. The casing and rotor are provided with a network of conduits which interconnect selected cylinders as the motor moves through one complete revolution and balances the pressure between the two extremes existing within the inlet and outlet openings. Fluid pressure slightly in excess of the pressure present within the outlet opening is fed to each cylinder is register with that opening to move the piston and discharge the material from the apparatus.
Abstract:
Gases which accumulate in a pressure vessel for the desalination of seawater are discharged into a second vessel and pressurized therein by means of the produced, high-pressure freshwater, for discharging gas into the surrounding sea, after which the freshwater used for pressurization is returned to the desalination vessel. An active system and a passive system are described.
Abstract:
Finely divided particulate solids are discharged from a high pressure zone to a low pressure zone, e.g. to atmospheric pressure, by passing a dense bed of this particulate material through a long discharge channel and past a throttle element. The pressure drop across the throttle element is significantly reduced due to the fact that the moving dense bed in the discharge channel dissipates the pressure drop along this channel leaving only a small pressure drop to be achieved across the throttle element.
Abstract:
A system for the manufacture of synthetic hydrocarbon products from coal or similar carbonaceous solids is described. This coal liquefaction system includes means for reducing the pressure of high pressure and temperature liquid reaction product streams without attendant corrosion of the metal parts in the pressure reducing unit. The pressure reducing means comprises at least one elongated tube defining relatively narrow fluid flow passage, the reduction in pressure being effected substantially entirely by friction of the fluid within the tube.
Abstract:
A solids feeder and method for transporting particulate solids from an elevated solids feed reservoir and introducing the solids upwardly into the bottom of a solids upflow vessel. The feeder includes a stationary feed cylinder axially aligned with a bottom solids inlet of the upflow vessel and fitted with a vertically reciprocatable piston which alternately (1) retracts to allow the feed cylinder to receive solids from the feed reservoir by gravity flow through a feed chute and (2) extends to displace the solids upwardly into the upflow vessel. Horizontally reciprocatable slide plates prevent backflow of solids during the filling of the feed cylinder.
