Abstract: A method refines a lubricant comprising a compound having a perfluoropolyether structure via supercritical extraction. A lubricant is refined using the method and a magnetic recording medium that utilizes the refined lubricant. The refined lubricant exhibits excellent lubrication performance and long term stability in the magnetic recording medium. In one embodiment of the supercritical extraction, the lubricant contacts an extracting medium of supercritical carbon dioxide under a predetermined condition in a pressure vessel to remove ionic impurities and perfluoropolyether compounds having a weak polarity terminal group contained in the lubricant.

Abstract: Waterborne lubricants comprising: (A) water-soluble inorganic salt; (B) homogeneously dispersed solid lubricant; (C) at least one homogeneously emulsified substance selected from mineral oils, animal and plant oils and fats, and synthetic oils; (D) surfactant; and (E) water, in which the weight ratio (B)/(A) is from 0.05:1 to 2:1 and the weight ratio {C/(A+B)} is from 0.05:1 to 1:1, provide a one-step, highly lubricating waterborne lubricant for use in the cold plastic working of metals. This waterborne lubricant can replace the conversion coating treatment (phosphate, oxalate, etc.)+reactive soap treatment combined lubrication system now in general use and is free of the environmental issues associated with the combined lubrication system, provides for facile coating removal, and is not subject to the decline in seizure resistance caused by nonuniform add-on when large numbers of workpieces are treated together by immersion.

Abstract: A self-lubricating coating is provided which includes a mixture of a curable acrylate composition including a dipentaerythritol pentaacylate and a solid lubricant, such as polytetraflourethylenr. The curable acrylate composition may also include triethylene glycol dimethacrylate. An aramid pulp may also be added to the coating mixture. Also disclosed is a method of manufacturing the coating, and a self-lubricating bearing having the coating disposed on its surface.

Abstract: Mucilages and mucilage extracts are disclosed that are effective as water-soluble, non-toxic, biodegradable, environmentally benign lubricants and/or coolants for a variety of industrial and machining purposes. One embodiment of the invention is a cooling and/or lubricating composition comprises a sufficient amount of the mucilage to cool and/or lubricate a machining surface. Other embodiments further comprise a sufficient amount of a preservative to substantially inhibit degradation of the composition. Also encompassed within the scope of this invention are methods for making mucilage-comprising cooling and/or lubricating compositions, as well as concentrating and drying such compositions. Other aspects of this invention are methods for machining a surface, comprising extracting a mucilage, adding a sufficient amount of a preservative to substantially inhibit degradation of the mucilage to form a mucilage mixture, applying the mucilage mixture to a surface to be machined, and thereafter machining the surface. In another aspect, the invention provides methods for lubricating and/or cooling a machining surface comprising extracting a mucilage, adding a sufficient amount of a preservative to substantially inhibit degradation of the mucilage to form a mucilage mixture, and applying the mucilage mixture to the machining surface to act as a lubricant and/or coolant. A farther aspect of this invention is the use of plant mucilages to coat the outer hull of watercraft, thereby reducing friction and drag, and increasing the speed of the craft. Optionally, such a composition may further comprise a cream wax.

Abstract: A self lubricating, friction and wear reducing composite material useful over a wide temperature range of from cryogenic temperature up to about 900.degree. C. contains 60-80 wt. % of particulate Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3, dispersed in a metal binder of a metal alloy containing Cr and at least 50 wt. % of Ni, Cr or a mixture of Ni and Cr. It also contains 5-20 wt. % of a fluoride of at least one Group I, Group II, or rare earth metal and, optionally, 5-20 wt. % of a low temperature lubricant metal. Such as Ag, Au, Pt, Pd, Rh and Cu. This composite exhibits less oxidation instability and less abrasiveness than composites containing chromium carbide, is readily applied using plasma spray and can be ground and polished with a silicon carbide abrasive.
