A multifunction device includes a plurality of slots capable of accepting the insertion of media. Initially, the multifunction device is set to a single drive mode (automatic switching mode) and subsequently is set to a multi-drive mode upon receiving a GET_MAX_LUN command from a personal computer. In the single drive mode, a drive is assigned only to one slot in which a medium has been first inserted. In the multi-drive mode, drives are assigned for all of the slots respectively.

A disclosed image processing apparatus performs non-contact communication with a mobile terminal, and includes a first communication unit and a second communication unit having different communication areas from one another, and a processing unit. When the mobile terminal is within the communication area of the first communication unit, the first communication unit receives, from the mobile terminal, setting information for establishing communication between the mobile terminal and the second communication unit, and function information indicating a function for processing substantial information including a document and/or an image to be received/transmitted by the second communication unit. The second communication unit establishes communication with the mobile terminal based on the setting information received by the first communication unit, and receives from or transmits to the mobile terminal, the substantial information. The processing unit processes the substantial information with the function corresponding to the function information received by the first communication unit.

The portable device has connecting members, a selecting member, and a communicating member. The connecting members send and receive data to and from said external devices. The selecting member selects one of said connecting members among those connected to some of said external devices. The communicating member sends and receives data to and from an external device using the selected connecting member.

A multiple control station (201) transmits a first broadcast frame including a first identifier for identifying a first host (202) and a second broadcast frame including a second identifier for identifying a second host (203) to a terminal station (52) over a wireless channel using time division. The multiple control station then receives a connection request frame that requests connection with the first host (202) or the second host (203) from the terminal station (52). Arbitration is then performed so that the terminal station is connected to the first host or the second host in accordance with the first identifier or the second identifier included in the received connection request frame.

The object is to realize reasonable power-saving operation in a NIC portion depending on a link status for the Ethernet in a system device including a NIC. For the protocol process functional portion and/or the encryption process functional portion in the NIC portions, the energy-saving process is executed in accordance with conditions, determined whether a protocol process is performed by the NIC or the controller depending on a link status. The power supply to the protocol process functional portion and the encryption process functional portion is turned off in the NIC.
