Abstract: Systems and methods for object and material recognition are provided and include a hyperspectral infrared camera that captures a three-dimensional image of an object and black-body emissions data indicating a polarization of black-body radiation emitted from the object. An image processing device accesses a database of expected polarization signatures of black-body emissions from materials at different temperatures and determines a material of the object based on (i) the black-body emissions data indicating the polarization of the black-body radiation emitted from the object, (ii) an ambient temperature of the environment of the system, and (iii) the database of expected polarization signatures of black-body emissions from a plurality of materials for different temperatures.

Abstract: Methods, apparatus and systems that relate to a low-cost reconfigurable polarimetric imaging are described. One example polarization imaging system includes a lens positioned to receive light reflected from one or more objects, and a spectral-polarization filter positioned at an aperture plane of the lens to filter the light received by the lens. The polarization imaging system can further include a sensor positioned to detect the filtered light from the spectral-polarization filter to form a polarization image of the one or more objects. The spectral-polarization filter comprises a first array of multiple spectral filters and a second array of multiple polarizers.

Abstract: An image polarimeter includes a MEMS MMA divided into two or more segments in which the mirrors in each segment are provided with a polarizer of a given polarization. The mirrors in each segment are tipped and tilted to steer polarized light onto different portions of an optical detector. In certain configurations the mirrors may also be pistoned to reduce aberrations. Each frame that is read out from the detector includes two or more distinct component polarized images having different polarizations P0, P2, . . . of the same scene to fully characterize the polarization properties of the scene. Since the mirrors only tip/tilt/piston in the dead period between frames, no components are moving during image acquisition and co-registration of the component polarized images is simple. The number of segments and the different polarizations may be selected to implement Jones calculus, Mueller calculus and Stokes parameters or other polarimetry techniques.

Abstract: In order to estimate a polarization fluctuation speed with high accuracy independently of the quality of a received signal, a polarization-fluctuation estimating device according to the present invention includes: a polarization de-multiplexing unit that generates a single-polarization optical signal from an input polarization-multiplexed optical signal; a photoelectric converting unit that converts the generated optical signal into an electrical signal; and an estimation unit that estimates the polarization fluctuation speed of the polarization-multiplexed optical signal in accordance with the electrical signal.
