Abstract: The apparatus is for use with a LAN that has a backup system, an Internet connection and an associated memory storage capacity. The apparatus comprises a computer case, data storage devices and a motherboard. The computer case is adapted to receive data storage devices at least equal in capacity to the LAN. The data storage devices are mounted in the case and have capacity at least equal to that of the LAN. The motherboard has an operating system, a virtualization product, a NAS program and a firewall. The firewall is operatively interposed between the LAN and the Internet connection to protect the LAN from attack. The NAS is configured to be active only during backup operations initiated by task manager components of the virtualization to facilitate a location for the backup of a mirror copy of the data on the LAN by the backup system on the data storage.

Abstract: A system and method for securing virtual cloud assets in a cloud computing environment against cyber threats. The method includes: determining a location of a snapshot of at least one virtual disk of a protected virtual cloud asset, wherein the virtual cloud asset is instantiated in the cloud computing environment; accessing the snapshot of the virtual disk based on the determined location; analyzing the snapshot of the protected virtual cloud asset to detect potential cyber threats risking the protected virtual cloud asset; and alerting detected potential cyber threats based on a determined priority.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for caching data during an on-demand restore using a cloud block map. A client may be provided with access to an on-demand volume during a restore process that copies backup data from a snapshot within a remote object store to the on-demand volume stored within local storage. In response to receiving a request from the client for a block of the backup data not yet restored from the snapshot to the on-demand volume, the block may be retrieved from the snapshot in the remote object store. The block may be cached within a cloud block map stored within the local storage as a cached block. The client may be provided with access to the cached block.

Abstract: A computer-implemented data backup method comprises storing metadata associated with an object in a secondary storage layer of a backup system, the metadata representing a data structure for the object, dividing a set of data representing the object into multiple variable length chunks, determining whether an existing chunk of data that is the same as at least a part of the variable length chunk exists in a primary storage layer of the backup system, storing the variable length chunk in the primary storage layer of the backup system, and on the basis of the determination, providing the primary storage layer of the backup system with an indication of the location of the existing chunk of data.

Abstract: Techniques described herein relate to systems and methods of data storage, and more particularly to providing layering of file system functionality on an object interface. In certain embodiments, file system functionality may be layered on cloud object interfaces to provide cloud-based storage while allowing for functionality expected from a legacy applications. For instance, POSIX interfaces and semantics may be layered on cloud-based storage, while providing access to data in a manner consistent with file-based access with data organization in name hierarchies. Various embodiments also may provide for memory mapping of data so that memory map changes are reflected in persistent storage while ensuring consistency between memory map changes and writes. For example, by transforming a ZFS file system disk-based storage into ZFS cloud-based storage, the ZFS file system gains the elastic nature of cloud storage.

Abstract: Described in detail herein are systems and methods for single instancing blocks of data in a data storage system. For example, the data storage system may include multiple computing devices (e.g., client computing devices) that store primary data. The data storage system may also include a secondary storage computing device, a single instance database, and one or more storage devices that store copies of the primary data (e.g., secondary copies, tertiary copies, etc.). The secondary storage computing device receives blocks of data from the computing devices and accesses the single instance database to determine whether the blocks of data are unique (meaning that no instances of the blocks of data are stored on the storage devices). If a block of data is unique, the single instance database stores it on a storage device. If not, the secondary storage computing device can avoid storing the block of data on the storage devices.

Abstract: This disclosure provides methods and techniques of data replication involving cross replication group (RG) references. The present disclosure avoids automatic replication failing when an entity in an RG refers to another entity external to the RG. The entity to be replicated within the RG is referred to as the “referring entity,” and the entity as the dangling reference is referred to as the “referred entity.” Although the referring and referred entities are not replicated together in a replication operation, the referred entity may have already been replicated to the target account in another replication operation on a different replication group. In such cases, the data replication procedure may, according to aspects of the present disclosure, check if the referred entity has already been replicated, and if so, proceed to replicate the referring entity without fail, and link the referring and referred entities to enable normal functioning of the referring entity.

Abstract: Modifying a clone image of a dataset, including: generating, based on metadata describing one or more updates to a dataset, a tracking copy of replica data on a target data repository; generating, after receiving an indication to begin accepting modifications to the tracking copy of the replica data, a cloned image of the dataset that is modifiable without modifying the tracking copy of the replica data; and responsive to a storage operation directed to the target data repository, modifying the cloned image of the dataset without modifying the tracking copy of the replica data.
