Abstract:
A method of making a porous, hydrophilic layer with a high surface energy on a substrate for a printing plate, ink jet receiver or the like by the steps of grinding an inorganic gel containing a liquid to provide a fine coatable dispersion of inorganic gel, coating the dispersion of inorganic gel onto the substrate, and heating the dispersion coating to provide the porous hydrophilic layer.
Abstract:
An imaging member is composed of a hydrophilic imaging layer having a hydrophilic heat-sensitive polymer containing heat-activatable thiosulfate groups, and optionally a photothermal conversion material. Upon application of energy that generates heat, such as from IR irradiation, the polymer is crosslinked and rendered more hydrophobic. The exposed imaging member can be contacted with a lithographic printing ink and a fountain solution and used for printing with or without post-imaging wet processing. This imaging member is particularly useful for direct write imaging using IR lasers or thermal printing heads.

Abstract:
A retroreflective article utilizing a solventless bead bond composition wherein the bead bond composition includes a urethane/acrylate interpenetrating polymer network in which the urethane polymer is a thermoplastic and the acrylate component is a thermoset. The solventless bead bond is applied as a mixture of diisocyanates, diols, multifunctional acrylates and additives and thermally cured to a rubbery, thermoplastic solid. At this point the bead bond can be softened or molded with the application of heat or stored for a period of time without loss of thermoplasticity. Final retroreflective sheeting constructions which possess superior adhesion to acrylics, toughness and high retroreflectance are achieved by curing the multifunctional acrylates with radiation.
Abstract:
The present invention provides ultraviolet radiation (UV)-curable compositions and a method for making a UV-curable composition comprising: mixing at least one wax, at least one radiation-polymerizable compound, and at least one inhibitor of polymerization; dissolving the wax in the radiation-polymerizable compound by heating to provide a mixture of radiation-polymerizable compound, wax and inhibitor; cooling said mixture to provide a dispersion of the wax in the radiation-polymerizable compound; and micronizing the dispersion to provide a UV-curable composition. The invention further provides a method for coating a substrate with a UV-curable coating, and a coating, paint, varnish or ink comprising a UV-curable composition. Manufactured articles formed using the coatings, paints, varnishes and inks comprising a UV-curable composition are also provided.
Abstract:
A water-borne road marking paint is characterized in that incorporated within the paint are particles of a solid polymer or inorganic compound, which are capable of absorbing water. Preferred particles are ion exchange resin beads. Incorporation of such particles either during or immediately after application of the paint results in an accelerated speed of drying of the paint on the road.

Abstract:
A coating composition which encompasses an aqueous dispersion of from about 2 to about 40 percent by dry weight, based on the dry weight of the coating composition, of a cationic polymer; and from about 60 to about 98 percent by dry weight, based on the dry weight of the coating composition, of a nonionic or cationic binder. The coating composition is thermally fusible and adapted to be receptive to ink jet inks and to retain the ink jet inks after being thermally fused. Alternatively, the coating composition may encompass an aqueous dispersion of a powdered thermoplastic polymer and from about 10 to about 150 dry parts by weight of a binder, based on 100 dry parts by weight of the powdered thermoplastic polymer. Desirably, the coating composition will encompass an aqueous dispersion of a powdered thermoplastic polymer; from about 2 to about 50 dry parts by weight, based on 100 dry parts by weight of the powdered thermoplastic polymer, of a cationic polymer; and from about 10 to about 150 dry parts by weight, based on 100 dry parts by weight of the powdered thermoplastic polymer, of a nonionic or cationic binder. The coating composition also may contain from about 1 to about 5 parts by weight, based on the weight of the coating composition, of a surfactant. When applied to a substrate, the coating composition permits printing on the substrate with ink jet inks to give a printed image which is durable, especially in the presence of water.
