A method for preparing a water soluble lubricating additive having the generic structural formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl group having from 1 to 34 carbon atoms; R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are independent alkylene groups having from 2 to 30 carbon atoms; x is either 1 or 2; y is either 0 or 1 when x=1 and is 0 when x=2; m is either 0 or 1 and n=2 to 30 is disclosed, wherein a sulfur-containing alcohol is initially reacted with an organic carboxylic acid to produce an alkylmercapto ester which is then further reacted with an alkylene oxide to produce the lubricating additive. The water-soluble lubricating additives produced in this manner are useful as lubricating additives for water-based fluids used in metalworking operations.
Abstract:
A new type of ionic thickener for water-based products including functional fluids such as hydraulic fluids, cosmetic emulsions, etc. These new thickeners are prepared from polyoxyalklylene glycols, higher alkyl monoepoxides, lower alkyl monohalo lower alkyl carboxylates, and alkali metal hydroxide. These novel thickeners are generally characterized by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R is a methylene or lower polymethylene group, R' is a higher alkyl group and R" is selected from the group consisting of oxyethylene groups and heteric or block copolymer mixtures of oxyethylene and other lower oxyalkylene groups, said copolymer containing at least 75 percent oxyethylene groups.

Abstract:
Novel dimer esters and polyesters derived from and adduct of 5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride and O,O-dialkyldithiophosphoric acid have been produced. These dimer esters and polyesters are useful extreme pressure agents, antiwear agents and oxidation inhibitors as well as friction modifying agents for functional fluids used in motorized vehicles.
Abstract:
This invention relates to synthetic polyether thickeners and thickened aqueous systems containing them. The thickeners are unique because they can be used in aqueous systems at less than ten percent weight concentration which will flow in a Vickers 104(C) Vane pump at use temperatures. These properties make them particularly useful for thickening hydraulic fluids used in high pressure vane and gear pumps. The thickeners are prepared by reacting conventional polyether polyols with alpha-olefin epoxides having an average of 6 to 12 total carbon atoms to obtain products with specific epoxide-to-hydroxyl ratios.
Abstract:
Novel compositions useful as fluid gelling agents, especially for use in subterranean applications such as drilling fluids, are prepared by reacting an aqueous dispersion of a clay, such as bentonite, with an aqueous gel of a monodispersed mixed metal layered hydroxide of the formula Li.sub.m D.sub.d T(OH).sub.m+2d+3+na) A.sub.a.sup.n, where D is a divalent metal, such as Mg, T is a trivalent metal, such as Al, and A represents other monovalent or polyvalent anions, the formula being described in detail in the disclosure.
Abstract:
A water soluble metalworking fluid is the subject of this invention. The fluid is utilized at a concentration of about 3 weight percent in aqueous solution. The active ingredients are comprised of disodium phosphate heptahydrate, sodium molybdate, sodium vanadate, 1,2,3-benzotriazole, a fluorinated hydrocarbon surfactant, a biocide, and a foam suppressant, all in aqueous solution. The resulting fluid is water soluble, transparent, film free, non-putrefying, non-toxic, a non-irritant, non-corrosive, non-polluting, and has very low BOD and COD values.
