Abstract: A method for studying the behaviour of a cell sample contained in a medium containing a plurality of anisotropically shaped nanoparticles dispersed therein, the method including: (i) determining at least one nanoparticle orientation characteristic in a measurement zone at the interface between the fluid medium and the cell sample, the orientation resulting at least partially from the interaction of the fluid medium and the biological material; (ii) determining a mean shear rate characteristic of the fluid medium in the measurement zone from said at least one nanoparticle orientation characteristic determined in this measurement zone; and (iii) determining a characteristic of the cell sample from the mean shear rate thus determined in the measurement zone.

The method comprises the steps of providing a preform, the preform comprising a support element (3) at least partially made of a first polymeric material; and carrying out a thermal drawing process of the preform to produce a thermally drawn fibre. The preform comprises one or more chemically active agents and/or biological materials configured to react with a fluid sample when the one or more chemically active agents and/or biological materials are in contact with the fluid sample. In this manner miniaturised lab-in-fibre devices can be fabricated.

Abstract: A method for generating ultrashort pulses includes directing a master beam having ultrashort pulses and at least one slave beam through an optical gate material. The intensity of the slave beam upstream of the optical gate material is lower than that of the master beam upstream of the optical gate material. The optical gate material and the pulses of the master beam are chosen to induce a Kerr effect when the master beam passes through the optical gate material, the Kerr effect producing a modulation of the phase of the slave beam in association with pulses of the master beam when the slave beam passes through the optical gate material. The modulation of the phase of the slave beam is transformed into a modulation of the amplitude thereof using a complementary optical device to generate a slave beam downstream of the optical gate material having ultrashort pulses.
