Abstract: A one-part thermally curable composition comprises at least one polyuretdione, thermally activatable amine curative; optional epoxy resin; optional polythiol having an average sulfhydryl group functionality of at least 2; and optional acid stabilizer. The at least one polyuretdione has an average uretdione ring functionality of at least 1.2, and is a reaction product of components comprising: a uretdione-containing material comprising a reaction product of a diisocyanate reacted with itself; a first hydroxyl-containing compound having a single OH group, wherein the first hydroxyl-containing compound is a primary alcohol or a secondary alcohol; and a second hydroxyl-containing compound having more than one OH group, wherein the second hydroxyl-containing compound is a polyol and the reaction product comprises 0.2 to 0.5, inclusive, of hydroxyl equivalents relative to isocyanate equivalents. Cured compositions and assemblies including them are also disclosed.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a polymeric material including a polymerized reaction product of a polymerizable composition including components, a polythiol having an average sulfhydryl group functionality of 2 or greater, and an acidic stabilizer. The components include a uretdione-containing material including a reaction product of a diisocyanate reacted with itself; a first hydroxyl-containing compound having more than one OH group; and an optional second hydroxyl-containing compound having a single OH group. The second hydroxyl-containing compound is a primary alcohol or a secondary alcohol. The present disclosure also provides a two-part composition, in which a polymeric material is included in the first part and the second part includes at least one accelerator. Further, a method of adhering two substrates is provided, including obtaining a two-part composition; combining at least a portion of the first part with at least a portion of the second part to form a mixture; disposing at least a portion of the mixture on a first substrate; and contacting a second substrate with the mixture disposed on the first substrate. The disclosure also provides a polymeric material and a method of curing a two-part composition. Advantageously, two-part compositions according to the present disclosure can be used as sealants, coatings, and adhesive systems having a two-step cure with handling and performance similar to existing two-part urethane systems, but with less sensitivity to water.

Abstract: Curable compositions are provided including a curable system that requires a thermally generated amine to cause curing of the system, and a self-assembled particle distributed in the curable system. The curable system contains at least one reactive moiety and the self-assembled particle comprises a reactive amine ionically bound to a chromonic network. A multilayer article is also provided, including a substrate, a chromonic amine layer disposed on the substrate, and a curable layer disposed on the chromonic amine layer. Methods of making a cured composition and of adhering two substrates together are further provided.

The present disclosure also provides a two-part composition, in which the polymeric material is included in the first part and the second part includes at least one amine. Further, a method of adhering two substrates is provided, including obtaining a two-part composition; combining at least a portion of the first part with at least a portion of the second part to form a mixture; disposing at least a portion of the mixture on a first substrate; and contacting a second substrate with the mixture disposed on the first substrate. The disclosure also provides a polymerized product of the two-part composition and a battery module. Advantageously, two-part compositions can be used as coatings and adhesive systems including high loadings of inorganic filler, such as thermally conductive filler, with handling and performance similar to existing two-part urethane systems, but with less sensitivity to water.

The sum of the absolute value of the difference in the refractive index of the filler and the refractive index of the composition cured without filler plus the birefringence of the filler is 0.054 or less, i.e. 0.054≥|nfiller−nmatrix|+δfiller, where nfiller is the refractive index of the filler, nmatrix is the refractive index of the composition cured without filler, and δfiller is the birefringence of the filler.

A ring (12) of uncured, non-flowable adhesive is placed around the male end of a male (14)/female (22) pipe interface. Upon exposure to elevated temperatures, the ring (12) melts and flows down into the interface, and cures.
