    Abstract: In some examples, a method for making a refractory component includes depositing carbon on a surface of a refractory substrate. The carbon fills surface voids on the surface of the refractory substrate. A melting point of the refractory substrate is greater than or equal to about 1500 degrees Celsius (° C.). The method includes applying a metal slurry to a surface of the refractory substrate following the deposition of the carbon and reacting a metal of the metal slurry with the carbon to form a metal carbide phase within the surface voids of the refractory substrate.

    Abstract: A method for forming a high temperature coating includes applying carbon powder to a surface of a carbon/carbon (C/C) composite substrate to force the carbon powder into one or more surface voids of the surface of the C/C composite substrate. The carbon powder has a substantially same composition and morphology as a surface portion of the C/C composite substrate. The method includes applying a metal slurry to the surface of the C/C composite substrate following the application of the carbon powder and reacting a metal of the metal slurry with carbon of the carbon powder and carbon of the surface portion of the C/C composite substrate to form a metal-rich antioxidant layer of a metal carbide on the C/C composite substrate.

    Abstract: A method for using a shape memory alloy (SMA) with a non-evaporable getter (NEG) employed in a vacuum device is disclosed. The method comprises coupling a NEG component to a SMA component to form an NEG/SMA assembly pair; heating the NEG/SMA assembly pair to activate the NEG component; and packaging the activated NEG component with the SMA component to form an NEG/SMA package having a gas tight seal. The method further comprises installing the NEG/SMA package in the vacuum device; and heating the installed NEG/SMA package such that the SMA component is actuated to expose the activated NEG component to a vacuum chamber in the vacuum device.
