Abstract:
The invention relates to enamels which are water-dilutable after neutralization with bases and which contain non-ionically blocked strong acids as the cross-linking catalysts. In comparison with enamels with ionically blocked strong acids, the hardened enamel films exhibit no wrinkling and improved acid-resistance.
Abstract:
An aminoplast-curable film-forming composition is disclosed. The film-forming composition is a crosslinkable composition comprising (1) a material containing a plurality of carbamate and/or urea functional groups and (2) an aminoplast crosslinking agent. The composition provides a coating with improved acid etch resistance, making the coating particularly useful as an automotive clear coat.
Abstract:
An aqueous aminoplast-curable film-forming composition is disclosed. The aqueous film-forming composition is a crosslinkable composition comprising (1) a material containing a plurality of carbamate and/or urea functional groups and (2) an aminoplast crosslinking agent. The aqueous composition provides a coating with improved acid etch resistance, making the compositions particularly useful as automotive clear coats.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a curable coating composition that includes at least three components. The coating composition includes a component (a) that includes one or both of a compound (a)(1) having at least one carbamate group or terminal urea group according to the invention and having at least two linking groups that are urethane or urea or a compound (a)(2) having at least two groups selected from carbamate groups, terminal urea groups, or combinations of the two and at least four urethane or urea linking groups. The second component (b) of the coating composition includes a polymer resin comprising active hydrogen-containing functional groups reactive with the third component (c). The resins is selected from polyester, polyurethane, or polyester-polyurethane copolymers Component (c) of the coating composition is a curing agent that is reactive with the first two components. Preparation of coated articles using the compositions of the invention is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A color-plus-clear coating system is disclosed. A pigmented or colored basecoat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a transparent topcoat to the basecoat. The transparent topcoat composition is a crosslinkable composition comprising (1) a material containing a plurality of carbamate and/or urea functional groups and (2) an aminoplast crosslinking agent. The topcoat composition provides a composite coating with improved acid etch resistance, making the composite coating particularly useful as an automotive topcoat.
Abstract:
A water-based coating composition and methods of making and using the same are disclosed. The composition includes a halogenated resin, a polyol, a surfactant, and an amine. It is suitable for coating a variety of substrates including polyolefinic substrates such as polypropylene, and operates without aromatic organic solvents.

Abstract:
The present invention provides for amino-crosslinkable coating formulations based on a mixture of a di- or polyhydroxy functional polymeric component selected from the group consisting of diesters, polyesters, alkyd polymers, acrylic polymers and polycarbonate polymers, a crosslinking agent such as a methylol (alkoxymethyl) amino crosslinking agent, and a reactive additive which is the ester reaction product of a phenol carboxylic acid, preferably para-hydroxybenzoic acid, and an epoxy compound selected from glycidyl ethers, glycidyl esters, linear epoxies and aromatic epoxies. The crosslinkable compositions of this invention may be used to prepare curable coating and paint formulations, and also may contain other ingredients such as a crosslinking catalyst, fillers, pigments and the like. When cured, the coatings of this invention exhibit improved physical and chemical properties when compared with cured coatings which do not contain the ester reaction product additive.
Abstract:
Sulfonimide cure catalysts are used with aminoplast crosslinking agents and resins capable of reacting with aminoplast crosslinking agents to prepare heat curable compositions capable of crosslinking to form coatings and articles. Liquid or solid curable compositions may be prepared. Solid sulfonimide catalysts used in combination with solid glycoluril type crosslinking agents are well suited for powder coating systems containing hydroxy- and carboxy-functional resins.
