Abstract:
Sulfonimide cure catalysts are used with aminoplast crosslinking agents and resins capable of reacting with aminoplast crosslinking agents to prepare heat curable compositions capable of crosslinking to form coatings and articles. Liquid or solid curable compositions may be prepared. Solid sulfonimide catalysts used in combination with solid glycoluril type crosslinking agents are well suited for powder coating systems containing hydroxy- and carboxyfunctional resins.

Improved powder coating compositions comprise a hydroxyl functional binder having carboxylic ester functionality and a transesterification cure catalyst comprising an epoxide and a non-acidic nucleophile, preferably onium salts. Resins such as hydroxyl functional acrylic, hydroxyl functional polyester, ester functional polyesters, and methyl succinate esters of bisphenol epoxides transesterify in the presence of an epoxide and phosphonium salts such as tetrabutylphosphonium acetate and yield coatings having exceptional hardness, impact resistance and solvent resistance at bake temperatures of about 300.degree. F.
Abstract:
An aqueous coating composition which comprises an aqueous resin having a carboxyl group (I) and a water-insoluble resin powder (II), the aqueous resin (I) being the one dispersible or soluble into an aqueous medium by ionization when the carboxyl group is neutralized with a basic substance, and the water-insoluble resin powder (II) being the one of 5 to 100 in acid value obtained by reaction between a carboxyl group-containing resin of 20 to 300 in acid value in a solid state at room temperature and a monoepoxy compound or a monoisocyanate compound.

Abstract:
A coating composition comprises a hydroxy component having at least two free hydroxyl groups per molecule and an anhydride component which is a polymer-containing cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride groups derived from an olefinically unsaturated cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride, the two components being packaged separately during storage of the composition and being compatible on mixing. At least one of the components is a film-forming polymer. The composition includes a catalytically effective amount of amine groups for accelerating the curing reaction between the hydroxyl groups and the anhydride groups. The amine groups are present in the molecule of the hydroxy component or in a separate amine compound. The hydroxy component is preferably a film-forming acrylic copolymer having pendent hydroxyl and dialkyl-amino-alkyl groups. The composition is particularly useful as a glossy pigmented coating for rigid substrates such as vehicle bodies where hardening of the coating at ambient temperature is required.
