Coating formulations which behave as elastic solids having reversible stress-induced fluidity are prepared by creating a fluid having distributed therein effective amounts of ionic charge sites and countercharge sites. For instance, elastic solids having reversible stress-induced fluidity are prepared by combining liquid formulations with a dispersion of a small, but effective, amount of at least one crystalline mixed metal hydroxide conforming substantially to the formulaLi.sub.m D.sub.d T(OH).sub.(m+2d+3+n.multidot.a) (A.sup.n).sub.a .multidot.xH.sub.2 Owhere m is zero to one, D is a divalent metal, d is from zero to 4, T is a trivalent metal, A represents at least one anion or negative-valence radical of valence n and a is the amount of A, where n is 1 or more, (m+2d+3+n.multidot.a) is equal to or greater than 3, (m+d) is greater than zero, and xH.sub.2 O represents excess waters of hydration, if any. The coating formulations include, for example, paints, resin coatings, adhesives, de-icers, curable coatings, dryable coatings, and hardenable coatings.

The mold release material for die castings is such one that an emulsion based on animal or vegetable oils, mineral oil, fatty acid and esters thereof is added an alkali metal or alkali earth metal salt of EDTA in the range 10-10,000 ppm. The alkali metal or alkali earth metal salt of EDTA prevents the aqueous solution of emulsion of the mold release material of the invention from micell formation, forms a stable emulsion, is scarcely affected by temperature, and forms bivalent metal ion and water soluble complex whereby it does not form deposits even if hard water is used as diluted water of the mold release material.

A solid film lubricant system for protecting metal wear interfaces subject to high temperatures and wet lubrications, comprising an oil-attracting solid lubricant mixture with at least two elements selected from the group of graphite, MoS.sub.2 and BN; a support (i.e., hard lands or hard sublayer) for the mixture to loads of at least 10 psi at temperatures of 600.degree.-800.degree. F. while being thermally stable; a thermally stable thermoset polymer matrix adhering the mixture to the support or the wear surface, the polymer having inherent hydrocarbon chemical attraction to form a tenacious oil film of the lubricating oil on the wearing surface. A method of making anti-friction coated surfaces comprising providing a light metal based cylinder surface (i.e., metal base or alloys of aluminum, titanium, or magnesium); exposing nonoxidized metal of the surface; applying a high elastic modulus load-supporting metal layer onto at least portions of the light metal cylinder surface; and simultaneously distributing a solvent-based solid film lubricant mixture and thermoset polymer onto at least portions of the layer at about room temperature to form a coating of desired thickness. An engine block with one or more anti-friction coated cylinder bore surfaces, comprising a hard, load-supporting face on the bore surface; and a coating on the face comprised of an oil-attracting solid lubricant mixture and a thermoset polymer that supports loads of at least 10 psi at temperatures of 600.degree.-800.degree. F. and is stable at such temperatures.

A squeeze casting powdery mold releasing agent according to this invention consists of a granulated or powdery mixture of a lubricant, an organic polymer and a metal soap; wherein the lubricant is coated with the organic polymer or the metal soap. Therefore, the mold releasing agent allows productions of castings of high quality, in a squeeze casting work, with good workability and without worsening environmental situations.

Silicone grease compositions are prepared by blending a thickening agent with a liquified crosslinked organosiloxane gel produced using a platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation reaction. The gel is liquified by application of a shearing force to the crosslinked gel. The shearing force can be applied prior to and/or during blending of the gel with the thickener.

A lubricating composition of about 90 to about 99% by weight of a lubricant and about 1 to about 5% by weight of a polymeric organometallic phthalocyanine complex, including nitrogen-substituted analogues thereof, where the complexed metal ion is preferably a Group IVA metal and provides increased time of machine operation to failure by improving grease or oil lubricated bearing performance. The phthalocyanine is doped with an electrically conductive dopant to bleed internal charge build up from the internals of turbines and large drive motors.

Reciprocating engine parts which involve substantially continuous frictional contact are coated with a solid film lubricant having excellent wear characteristics and adhesion. The parts in question are pistons, and the area to which the wear resistant solid lubricant film is bonded is the piston skirt--i.e., all or a portion of the area below the piston rings. The lubricant film is composed of a polyimide of 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane ("4-BDAF") and an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid (or dianhydride or ester thereof) containing from 25 to 125 parts by weight of fluorinated carbon per 100 parts by weight of the polyimide resin ("phr"), and preferably about 30 to about 100 phr of the fluorinated carbon.

The present invention is a fluid which exhibits excellent electrorheological properties at low current densities, at high temperatures, and in the complete absence of absorbed water or water of hydration. In a preferred embodiment, the fluid comprises lithium hydrazinium sulfate dispersed in silicone oil, and in the presence of an appropriate suspension stabilizing agent.
