Abstract: Guanidine-functionalized perlite particles are provided. Nonwoven articles are also provided, including a fibrous porous matrix and guanidine-functionalized perlite particles enmeshed in the fibrous porous matrix. Laminated articles are additionally provided, including a first substrate and a second substrate sealed to the first substrate along at least a portion of a perimeter of the first substrate. The laminated article further includes guanidine-functionalized perlite particles disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate. Methods of detecting microorganisms or target cellular analytes in a fluid sample using guanidine-functionalized particles or laminated articles are also provided.

Abstract: A compound represented by formula: is disclosed. R is hydrogen or alkyl; X is alkylene; Y is a bond, ether, thioether, amine, amide, ester, thioester, carbonate, thiocarbonate, carbamate, thiocarbamate, urea, thiourea, alkylene, arylalkylene, alkylarylene, or arylene, wherein alkylene, arylalkylene, alkylarylene, and arylene are optionally at least one of interrupted or terminated by at least one of an ether, thioether, amine, amide, ester, thioester, carbonate, thiocarbonate, carbamate, thiocarbamate, urea, or thiourea; and Z is an acrylate, a methacrylate, an acrylamide, a methacrylamide, a styrenyl, or a terminal alkenylene having at least three carbon atoms. A composition including the compound, and a method of determining the degree of cure of a curable polymeric resin are also disclosed.

Abstract: Guanidinyl ligand-functionalized polymers, methods of making the same, and substrates bearing a grafted coating of the ligand-functional polymers are described. The grafted polymer has the requisite affinity for binding neutral or negatively charged biomaterials, such as cells, cell debris, bacteria, spores, viruses, nucleic acids, endotoxins and proteins, at pH's near or below the pI's of the biomaterials.
