Abstract: Organic infrared attenuation agents have been developed to improve the thermal insulation properties of polymeric foams such as polystyrene low density foams. The organic infrared attenuation agents can include polyols such as sorbitol, maltitol, and poly(ethylene glycol), polysaccharides such as starch or cellulose, and infrared attenuation polyesters such as polybutylene terephthalate. The organic attenuation agents include aromatic compounds or carbon oxygen bonds that are effective in absorbing infrared radiation at the desired wavelengths.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) compositions and foaming agent masterbatches suitable for foaming, as well as foamed TPV compositions, methods of making the foregoing, and applications of various foamed TPV compositions. In particular, the present disclosure provides foaming agent masterbatches having unconventionally lower loading of foaming agent in carrier polymer. The carrier polymer may advantageously comprise or be a plastomer and/or propylene-based elastomer that is also suitable for inclusion in the TPV composition, and foaming the TPV composition may include the use of relatively greater amounts of foaming agent masterbatch. The use of greater amounts of foaming agent masterbatch with lower loading may allow for superior distribution of the foaming agent in the TPV composition during foaming, leading to greater uniformity of extent of foaming (e.g., as may be shown through greater uniformity of specific gravity in the foamed TPV composition).

Abstract: A method for making a low density foamed article includes placing a desired amount of thermoplastic polyurethane foam beads in a cavity of an injection mold and closing the mold; combining in an extruder connected to the mold a molten polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers and thermoplastic ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers with both a physical or chemical blowing agent other than a supercritical fluid present in an amount up to about 15 wt % based on molten polymer weight and a supercritical fluid that is at least one of about 0.1 to about 5 weight percent of supercritical CO2 based on molten polymer weight or about 0.1 to about 4 weight percent of supercritical N2 based on molten polymer weight, to form a mixture and injecting the mixture into the mold and foaming the mixture to form the low density foamed article.

The melamine foam described in the present invention has high density and high strength performance.

Abstract: PLA polymers that can be expanded into microporous articles having a node and fibril microstructure are provided. The fibrils contain PLA polymer chains oriented with the fibril axis. Additionally, the PLA polymers have an inherent viscosity greater than about 3.8 dL/g and a calculated molecular weight greater than about 150,000 g/mol. The PLA polymer article may be formed by bulk polymerization where the PLA bulk polymer is made into a preform that is subsequently expanded at temperatures above the glass transition temperature and below the melting point of the PLA polymer. In an alternate embodiment, a PLA polymer powder is lubricated, the lubricated polymer is subjected to pressure and compression to form a preform, and the preform is expanded to form a microporous article. Both the preform and the microporous article are formed at temperatures above the glass transition temperature and below the melting point of the PLA polymer.

Abstract: A composition comprising the reaction product of a polypropylene comprising at least 50 mol % propylene, and having a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) greater than 6, a branching index (g′vis) of at least 0.97, and a melt strength greater than 10 cN determined using an extensional rheometer at 190° C.; and within the range from 0.01 to 3 wt % of at least one organic peroxide, by weight of the polypropylene and organic peroxide. Such hyperbranched polypropylenes are useful in films, foamed articles, and thermoformed articles.
